Abstract
In this research, based on socio-spatiality as the starting point, it has conducted extensive city space analysis to advance a new urban social space theory. Resting upon the basis of traditional continent philosophy, this social space theory has adopted the structuration methods, at the same time trying to build certain combination between theoretical frame work establishment and empirical observations. Therefore, the socio-spatial transition study is neither a macro theory of traditional structuralism nor a typology of urban planning theory, or a positivism social geography, but an operative theory on practical purpose. Firstly, what’s distinct from the traditional structuralism is that this study examines the endless transiting structural relations, not macroscopic narrations of absolute definition and structure. In fact, any city and space are always co-existed in their structurational transiting relationship, thus research in transition has become the main body of this study. And case study is a must for research in transition, as part of efforts to apply the structuration concept into practice reason. Secondly, this study first establishes the fundamental structuration concept of socio-spatial transition, which, as an operative tool, is applied to conduct transition analysis on specific case about the City of Beijing. Therefore, as a social space theory, referring to as science, remains criticism of traditional continent philosophy. However, this criticism did not working on the level of ideology or conceptions, but on transiting under structural relations, keeping it from incompetent ideology criticism of continental critical theory. Unfortunately contemporary urban and space development have now gone extremely unbalanced under a background of globalization; yet traditional macro theories are incapable of either producing significant impact on practice or helping people identify practical problems. While facing general issues, particularly the Chinese urban issue category established on a meta-structured city mode, the micro-case study has plunged into dilemma for unknowing either to ask questions or to answer questions. Therefore, this study is set to identify dilemma and find direction for future relevant research. In this dissertation, Beijing is used as a model, and structuration methods as tools. It has extensively analyzed the social-spatial transition of the city space of Beijing, acquiring brand-new knowledge of its urban space development. It is helpful to an in-depth understanding of the city space development not only in Beijing, but also in many other cities that were influenced by the capital model of Beijing. Since the start of reform and opening-up, China has created a unique development mode of the new-styled metropolitan and urbanization in history. This research is expected to analyze or decode what China’s urban development in between communal space and associative space.
Real-world labs hold the potential to catalyse rapid urban transformations through real-world experimentation. Characterised by a rather radical, responsive, and location-specific nature, real-world labs face constraints in the scaling of experimental knowledge. To make a significant contribution to urban transformation, the produced knowledge must go beyond the level of a building, street, or small district where real-world experiments are conducted. Thus, a conflict arises between experimental boundaries and the stimulation of broader implications. The challenges of scaling experimental knowledge have been recognised as a problem, but remain largely unexplained. Based on this, the article will discuss the applicability of the “typology of amplification processes” by Lam et al. (2020) to explore and evaluate the potential of scaling experimental knowledge from real-world labs. The application of the typology is exemplified in the case of the Bauhaus.MobilityLab. The Bauhaus.MobilityLab takes a unique approach by testing and developing cross-sectoral mobility, energy, and logistics solutions with a distinct focus on scaling knowledge and innovation. For this case study, different qualitative research techniques are combined according to “within-method triangulation” and synthesised in a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. The analysis of the Bauhaus.MobilityLab proves that the “typology of amplification processes” is useful as a systematic approach to identifying and evaluating the potential of scaling experimental knowledge.
The objective of this thesis was to understand the 20th-century history of informal urbanisation in Europe and its origins in Madrid and Paris. The concept of informal urbanisation was employed to refer to the process of developing shacks and precarious single-family housing areas that were not planned by the public powers and were considered to be substandard because of their below-average materials and social characteristics. Our main hypothesis was that despite being a phenomenon with ancient roots, informal urbanisation emerged as a public problem and was subsequently prohibited in connection with another historical process occurred: the birth of contemporary urban planning. Therefore, its transformation into a deviant and illegal urban growth mechanism would have been a pan-European process occurring at the same pace that urban planning developed during the first decades of the 20th century.
Analysing the 20th-century history of informal urbanisation in Europe was an ambitious task that required using a large number of sources. To contend with this issue, this thesis combined two main methods: historiographical research about informal urbanisation in Europe and archival research of two case studies, Madrid and Paris, to make the account more precise by analysing primary sources of the subject.
Our research of these informal areas, which were produced mainly through poor private allotments and housing developed on land squats, revealed two key moments of explosive growth across Europe: the 1920s and 1960s. The near disappearance of informal urbanisation throughout the continent seemed to be a consequence not of the historical development of urban planning—which was commonly transgressed and bypassed—but of the exacerbation of global economic inequalities, permitting the development of a geography of privilege in Europe.
Concerning the cases of Paris and Madrid, the origins of informal urbanisation—that is, the moment the issue started to be problematised—seemed to occur in the second half of the 19th century, when a number of hygienic norms and surveillance devices began to control housing characteristics. From that moment onwards, informal urbanisation areas formed peripheral belts in both cities. This growth became the object of an illegalisation process of which we have identified three phases: (i) the unregulated development of the phenomenon during the second half of the 20th century, (ii) the institutional production of “exception regulations” to permit a controlled development of substandard housing in the peripheral fringes of both cities, and (iii) the synchronic prohibition of informal urbanisation in the 1920s and its illegal reproduction.
This research addresses the discourse of tourism as a tool for place-making of urban destination. Relevant to the study of place-making is the analysis of the commoditization and localization process dependent upon the appropriation of urban landscape and local cultures. In the research, localization is interpreted as the act of determining the attributes of locality, while commoditization is defined as the process by which local attributes that have commercial potential end up in becoming tourism commodity. Following this, the commoditization of intrinsic cultural value is disseminated within a branding strategy and intervention reflecting social and political relations. Therefore, the research suggests that tourism place-making has not only been constructed through the top-down regulatory body, but has been also generated through the attributes of its locality. By utilizing the critical and constructivist paradigm, the research depicts the conditions of the localization and commoditization process in establishing the base line of its realization within the symbolic economy. Thus, a qualitative case study approach was adopted. The study area of this dissertation is Palembang, as one of the capital cities in Indonesia advancing in its overall urban development. To investigate urban tourism as a tool for development strategy, it is useful to investigate the role of tourism which embodies (1) spatial transformation; how tourism gives significant impacts on urban form, and (2) the socio-cultural aspect; how neighbourhood is related to tourism industry. The findings suggest that tourism place-making involves the reciprocity of urban dynamics: cities take on tourism as a reference model of development, and tourist areas adopt the proliferation of cultural lifestyle to meet the industry’s demands.
The conservation of living heritage sites is a highly complex process. Two factors need careful consideration in order to achieve a balance in the management of such sites: the conservation demands of conservation experts for built heritage and the needs of local people for development of their heritage living space. The complexity of factors involved make for an interesting study of living heritage, taken up by this research in its main case study of the town of Nan in Thailand.
Research into the historical background of Nan and its cultural heritage reveals a living heritage site, which is both unique and diverse. Present day Nan was examined using a variety of analysis tools, which were applied to data from interviews, empirical data, field surveys, and documents, in order to better understand the nature of the living heritage site and changing trends over time. Luang Prabang in Lao PDR, a World Heritage site since 1995, was also selected as a further case study with which to compare Nan’s potential World Heritage status from a point of view of changes to living heritage attributes.
The outcomes of the research indicate the importance of the management of the sites, which can be at risk of losing balance by focusing on one aspect of heritage to the detriment of the other. The conservation perspective, if allowed to dominate, as in Luang Prabang, can cause irreparable damage to the social fabric, where the development needs of the town are not met. This research concludes that a balance of power amongst stakeholders in the collaborative networks managing such sites is vital to sustaining a balance of living heritage attributes.
The Garden Suburbs of Cairo. A morphological urban analysis of Zamālik, Ma‘ādī, and Heliopolis

During the British occupation of Egypt in the beginning of the 20th century, several suburban developments were established on the periphery of the city of Cairo. These initially attracted the small British community and later foreigners and Egyptians, mainly from the elite community. These suburban developments, including Ma‘ādī, Zamālik, Heliopolis, Qubbah-Gardens, and Garden City, became the fashionable residential quarters of Cairo. Until now, some of these areas still represent the distinguishable residential settlements of the city. Ma‘ādī, Zamālik, and Heliopolis specifically are nostalgically appropriated in the design of recent suburban developments around Greater Cairo.
Some of the 20th century suburban developments around Cairo are labeled or described as “garden cities.” During the early 20th century, two thriving British town planning movements emerged, namely, the garden city movement and the garden suburb movement. This study investigates the hypothesis that these suburban developments, are indeed “garden suburbs” like the British movement, despite that few are labeled or described as “garden cities,”. Although several studies have examined the historical development of such settlements, their relation, however, to the British planning movements and their transfer process received little attention from planning historians. Few studies also analyze the urban design aspects that made these suburban developments distinguishable since their foundation and until today.
To guide the validity of this study’s hypothesis, a set of research questions are formulated: (1) What is the difference between the garden city and the garden suburb movements? (2) How were the British planning movements transferred to Egypt? (3) What are the urban design aspects that makes these suburban developments distinguishable as garden suburbs? To answer these research questions, a historical morphological urban analysis is conducted through case studies.
The study first studies the difference between the garden city and the garden suburb movements, mainly in Britain, through the analysis of publications on the promoter of both movements: for the garden city, E. Howards’ book “The Garden City of Tomorrow,” published in 1902, and for the garden suburb, R. Unwin’s books “Town Planning in Practice,” published in 1909, and “Nothing Gained from Overcrowding,” published in 1912. Then a morphological urban analysis of Letchworth Garden City and Brentham Garden Suburb, considered the first examples of each movement, is conducted. In order to analyze the transfer process, the study adopts M. Volait and J. Nasr’s theory on transporting planning, through investigating the authority in power responsible for the establishment of these suburban developments. This is followed by the morphological urban analysis of three suburban developments around Cairo, namely, Zamālik, Ma‘ādī, and Heliopolis. The morphological analysis focuses on the background of their establishment, authority in power responsible for the development, design principles, urban context, street typology, residential block typology, social infrastructure, and social target group.
Finally, the study compares between Brentham, Letchworth, Zamālik, Ma‘ādī, and Heliopolis. The comparative analysis aims to highlight the differences between the studied cases of Cairo and how they are different from or alike the British movements. This study concludes that the suburban developments around Cairo during the British occupation, are in fact garden suburbs, despite that some are being described or labeled as garden city. This movement was exported via urban land development companies with foreign European capital, rather than via colonial dominance. It finally highlights a set of urban design aspects that distinguish them as garden suburbs of Cairo. This study hopes to support future conservation plan of these areas and the design of future suburban developments.
Post Conflict Reconstruction is a very complex topic, whether it is to be undertaken by the Local or the International Community. The process of the Post Conflict Development is to be very hard to investigate, primarily for the combination of socio-cultural phenomena, war and political instability; having difficulties of conducting solid empirical analysis (obtaining reliable data) and dealing with war-torn communities. The multifaceted process of the reconstruction is ought to touch a lot of countries vital segments, whereas each of them requires different approach; coordination with one another; and unification in their common aim.
The emergency of the assistance programs are not equal, same as with the priority and weight when compared with each other, therefore occasionally there are programs for the success of which the other less important actions are violated or neglected.
The case is with the International Community presence ( the set up), which aside from their mission and projects, it is considered to play a very important role on the urban development of a post conflict city; the setting was never planned or considered in a holistic manner, therefore IC establishment was done ad hoc and it was guided by issues which did not help at its greatest to the urban development of the city and more over to the citizens who were most in need.
The study is about the Urban Development, due to the fact that the biggest concentration of the International Community is likely to be in the urban centers, and the experienced changes are of a much considerable magnitude. The reconstruction phase is likely to be lasting at about 10 years and more , consequently the International Community for that time being tends to be recognized as temporary citizens of the city, and it is inevitably that they will be having an impact on the urban development of the city; in that basis it is considered to be significant that the International Community Establishment/Set Up be included into the International Organizations mission and assist in the overall mission of the reconstruction.
The Chinese Shopping Centre: Integration of a Western Commercial Format into Chinese Urban Space

Being transposed to China and absorbed by its urban space, the Western shopping centre undergoes a process of “Sinicisation”, which turns it into a spatial hybrid: a Western retail format shaped by distinctive features of Chinese space production and space use. To a large extent, this study can be regarded as a marginal number of its kind which tries to scientifically understand the impact of a socially, culturally and economically absolutely different urban environment on the model (ideal type) of the Western shopping centre.
Anhand der städtebaulichen und sozialen Transformation des östlichen Gründerzeitgebietes von Leipzig wird die Rolle von migrantischen Hausbesitzenden und in der Bausanierung Tätigen im Aufwertungsprozess untersucht. Der Zugang zum Gegenstand verbindet Fragen der Stadtsoziologie und der Denkmalforschung. Im sozialen Feld der Stadterneuerung wird die Revitalisierung des ehemals von Leerstand und Rückbau betroffenen Baubestandes ausgehandelt. Die Positionen der Akteur:innen im Feld werden durch ihre Ausstattung mit ökonomischem, aber auch sozialem und kulturellem Kapital bestimmt. Angehörige der Planungs- und Denkmalbehörden verfügen über institutionalisiertes Kulturkapital und stehen damit Kleineigentümer:innen, häufig Autodidakt:innen, gegenüber. Baudenkmale können über ihre Funktion als Geldanlage und Wohnraum hinaus Status repräsentieren und symbolisch angeeignet werden. Denkmalschutz dient dem öffentlichen Interesse am Erhalt historischer Bausubstanz. Bei Sanierungen bestehen die Herausforderungen der Vereinbarkeit von Konservierung und Modernisierung, der Finanzierbarkeit für Eigentümer:innen und der Sozialverträglichkeit für Bewohnende. Eine Darstellung der historischen Entwicklung des Leipziger Ostens zu Beginn der Analyse veranschaulicht die Abhängigkeit kultureller, sozialer und ökonomischer Werte des Baubestandes vom jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Kontext. Planerische Konzepte für das Gebiet zeigen, dass eine sozioökonomische Stabilisierung und Imageverbesserung erreicht werden sollte durch das Aufgreifen von Potentialen, wie den denkmalgeschützten Bauten, dem zuziehenden alternativen Milieu und migrantischer Ökonomie. Es wird deutlich, dass nach einer initialen Ansässigkeit von Pionier:innen die öffentlichen Infrastrukturmaßnahmen und Denkmalausweisungen eine Inwertsetzung v. a. durch externe Anlegende vorbereiteten. Darauf aufbauend wurden anhand einer qualitativen Befragung die Erfahrungen von städtischen Mitarbeitenden, Fachleuten und im Quartier Engagierten denen von lokalen migrantischen Hausbesitzenden und im Bereich Sanierung Tätigen gegenübergestellt. Migrant:innengruppen haben den Stadtraum in einer Phase vorherrschender Abwanderung durch die Eröffnung von Geschäften und Institutionen sowie den Erwerb von Immobilien für sich erschlossen. Strukturelle Benachteiligungen, wie Diskriminierung auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, ihre Ansässigkeit im sozial stigmatisierten Gebiet sowie geringes ökonomisches Kapital versuchten sie durch den Einsatz von sozialem Kapital auszugleichen. Sanierungen erfolgten mit hoher Eigenleistung und Rückgriff auf private Netzwerke. Die Analyse des Erneuerungsprozesses im Leipziger Osten zeigt, dass in einer initialen Phase Pionier:innen von Planenden und der Denkmalpflege als essentiell für die Entwicklung angesehen wurden. Günstige Instandsetzungen durch Kleineigentümer:innen wurden akzeptiert, um Gebäude vor weiterem Verfall zu bewahren. Mit der zunehmenden Forderung nach Verwendung hochwertiger Materialen werden die Sanierungsleistungen nach ästhetischen und letztlich ökonomischen Kriterien bewertet. Gegenüber sozialen Folgen einer Aufwertung von Bausubstanz lässt sich eine unkritische Haltung der Denkmalpflege erkennen. Bei der Vermarktung der Bestände durch professionelle Investierende findet die Sozialgeschichte des Stadtteils wenig Berücksichtigung, positiv besetzte Merkmale des Quartiers, wie Multikulturalität werden selektiv aufgegriffen. Der Anteil migrantischer Akteur:innen an der Entwicklung wird durch die Öffentlichkeit unzureichend anerkannt. Auch die Wertschätzung von Planenden und im Quartier Engagierten erfolgt v. a. anhand des ökonomischen Status. Hohe Erwartungen an die Geschäftsstruktur und die Erscheinung des Straßenbildes können nicht erfüllt werden. Migrantische Hausbesitzende und im Bereich Sanierung Tätige benötigen für die Auseinandersetzung mit der Denkmalpflege kulturelles Kapital. Sie erkennen die Bedeutung des historischen Baubestandes für die Stadt und die Arbeit der Institution an, kritisieren jedoch Sanierungsauflagen bzw. Mitarbeitende der Denkmalpflege und können sich z. T. gegen diese behaupten. Lokale migrantische Kleineigentümer:innen leisten durch ihre Quartiersbindung einen Beitrag zur ökonomischen und sozialen Stabilisierung. Mit ihrer Aufstiegsorientierung fördern sie in der Vermietungspraxis jedoch nur bedingt die Integration anderer Migrant:innen und grenzen sich von statusniedrigen Gruppen im Quartier ab. Migrantische Hausbesitzende und Unternehmende nehmen sich selbst als erfolgreiche Vorreitende in einer heterogener werdenden ostdeutschen Stadtgesellschaft wahr. Sie erkannten frühzeitig das Entwicklungspotential und gehören zu den Initiierenden und Profitierenden der Inwertsetzung.
Stadtpolitik für alle

Die Corona-Krise hat die Erosion städtischer Solidarität offen zu Tage treten lassen. Dagegen bringen Anton Brokow-Loga und Frank Eckardt in dieser Schrift die praktische Utopie einer solidarischen Postwachstumsstadt „auf den Punkt“.
Vom Commoning über die Umverteilung der städtischen Flächen bis zu einer sozial-ökologischen Verkehrswende: Eine progressive Stadtpolitik für alle überwindet bisheriges Schubladendenken. Sie setzt stattdessen auf heterogene Zusammenhänge und ungewöhnliche Bündnisse. Zu dem hier umrissenen Vorhaben gehört auch, eine basisdemokratisch orientierte Stadtpolitik mit dem Ziel einer umfassenden Transformation von Stadt und Gesellschaft zu verknüpfen.
Wie kann ein Blick auf die kommunale Ebene helfen, globalen Ungerechtigkeiten zu begegnen? Welchen Weg weisen munizipalistische Plattformen und Vergemeinschaftungen jenseits von Privat- oder Staatseigentum?
