The laser beam is a small, flexible and fast polishing tool. With laser radiation it is possible to finish many outlines or geometries on quartz glass surfaces in the shortest possible time. It's a fact that the temperature developing while polishing determines the reachable surface smoothing and, as a negative result, causes material tensions. To find out which parameters are important for the laser polishing process and the surface roughness respectively and to estimate material tensions, temperature simulations and extensive polishing experiments took place. During these experiments starting and machining parameters were changed and temperatures were measured contact-free.

Ralf Hennig is a PhD-candidate at the chair of Theory and History of Modern Architecture at the Bauhaus-University Weimar. His prior research interests are focused on historical and current interaction between media, architecture and the city as well as the influence of the alliance of these entities on traditional principles of dwelling. In 2004-2005 he was responsible for the conception and constitution of the postgraduate Master’s degree programme MediaArchitecture at the Bauhaus-University Weimar. In 2007-2008 he worked there as a scientific associate at the chair of Sociology of Globalisation, involved in various activities such as the research project MEDIACITY.
Das Bauen im Bestand ist ein wichtiges, aber vergleichsweise noch wenig erforschtes Wissenschaftsfeld. Die Konzentration auf das Bauen im Bestand im Wohnungsbau führte in den bautechnischen Abteilungen von Wohnungsunternehmen zu einem strategischen Wandel. Die Betreuung der Bestandsmaßnahmen ist zum wichtigsten Aufgabenfeld der technischen Bewirtschaftung geworden. Bestandsmaßnahmen bezeichnen die Baumaßnahmen, die die Wohnobjekte (Wohngebäude, Außenanlagen) und ihre Elemente erhalten oder verändern.
Basis für eine rationale und kosteneffiziente technische Bewirtschaftung der Wohnungsbestände sind Kenntnisse der charakteristischen Eigenschaften der Bestandsmaßnahmen und ihrer Abhängigkeiten. Die bisherigen empirischen Untersuchungen zu Bestandsmaßnahmen weisen forschungsmethodische und inhaltliche Defizite auf. Der Erkenntnisgewinn ist so noch nicht für die professionelle und kosteneffiziente technische Bewirtschaftung der Wohnungsbestände umsetzbar.
Ziel der Arbeit ist es, strategische Handlungsempfehlungen für die rationale und kostenoptimierte Auswahl von Bestandsmaßnahmen in Wohnungsunternehmen zu entwickeln und zu bewerten. Darauf aufbauend soll ein Konzept für eine objektiv begründete Auswahl von Bestandsmaßnahmen entworfen werden.
Die Arbeit basiert auf der empirischen Untersuchung von Bestandsmaßnahmen. Die Maßnahmen wurden am Beispiel eines unternehmensstrategisch interessanten Wohnungsunternehmens und eines statistisch gesehen typischen Wohnungsbestandes betrachtet. Es wurden circa 3000 Maßnahmen über einen Zeitraum von fünf Jahren untersucht.
Die Maßnahme- und Kostenverteilungen der Bestandsmaßnahmen werden in Abhängigkeit vom Baualter und von unternehmensstrategischen Einflussfaktoren charakterisiert. Mit diesen Erkenntnissen werden strategische Handlungsempfehlungen zur Erfüllung der Pflichten der technischen Bewirtschaftung sowie der Gewährleistung eines Investitionsminimums abgeleitet.
Die Handlungsempfehlungen dienen der Ermittlung von Kostensenkungspotentialen und der Berechnung des Investitionsminimums der technischen Bewirtschaftung. Sie werden in ein Konzept zur objektivierten und systematischen Auswahl der Maßnahmen eingebunden.

Douglas Graf received an A.B. in architecture and urban planning from Princeton and a M.Arch. from Harvard and currently teaches courses in design and architectural theory at the Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University. His teaching career has included the Kentucky, Washington, and Yale, as well as positions in Britain, Germany, and Finland, where he first went on a Fulbright to study the work of Alvar Aalto. He has received five teaching awards. His interest in design theory has a primary focus on formal analysis, which is applied not only to architecture but also to urban form, landscape, photography, painting, product design, and graphics. One of his signature investigations has been into the structure and use of diagrams as tools for ‘close reading.’ Many of his investigations have explored ‘metaphoric time’ as a central design strategy. He has written about the idea of the ‘encyclopedic set’ as a persistent means of modeling complexity and the use of ‘fictive landscapes’ to derive narratives for the city. He currently divides his time between Columbus (the one in Ohio) and London (not the one in Ohio), where he has been researching the design strategies in English gardens and the formal structure of the pre-industrial village. He is one of the principals in Mid-Ohio Design, a firm of architects and urban designers whose work elides from the real to the academic and who have won a number of urban design competitions.

Addison Godel is a student at the Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State, working towards a three-year Master of Architecture. He is a teaching assistant for a variety of history and theory courses, as well as two of the school’s European travel-abroad programs. His interests include the relationship between style and larger cultural forces, and the efforts of architecture to symbolically adapt and represent contemporary technology.

Keller Easterling is an architect, urbanist, and writer. Her latest book, Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and Its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005), researches familiar spatial products that have landed in difficult or hyperbolic political situations around the world. Her previous book, Organization Space: Landscapes, Highways and Houses in America, applies network theory to a discussion of American infrastructure and development formats. A forthcoming book, Extrastatecraft, researches global infrastructure as a medium of polity. Ms. Easterling is also the author of Call It Home, a laser disc history of suburbia, and American Town Plans. She has recently completed two research installations on the Web: “Wildcards: A Game of Orgman” and “Highline: Plotting NYC.” Her work has been widely published in journals such as Grey Room, Volume, Cabinet, Assemblage, Log, Praxis, Harvard Design Magazine, Perspecta, Metalocus, and ANY. Her work is also included as chapters in numerous publications. She has lectured widely in the United States as well as internationally. Ms. Easterling’s work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum, the Architectural League, the Municipal Arts Society, and the Wexner Center. Easterling is a professor at Yale’s School of Architecture.

Steffen de Rudder, Dr.-Ing., ist Architekt und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Er lehrt städtebauliches Entwerfen und forscht zu Themen der Architektur- und Stadtbaugeschichte. 1996 Lehrbeauftragter am Kunsthistorischen Institut der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 1990 bis 2001 selbstständiger Architekt in Potsdam und Berlin (Neubau, Sanierung, Denkmalpflege). Veröffentlichungen zur Bauhaus-Rezeption, zur amerikanischen Architekturgeschichte der Moderne und zur Stadtentwicklung in Berlin und in Thüringen. 2007 erschien: „Der Architekt Hugh Stubbins. Amerikanische Moderne der Fünfziger Jahre in Berlin“.
Tobias Danielmeier teaches design at the Otago Polytechnic as well as at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He holds a Masters of Arts in Architecture from the Münster School of Architecture and is currently completing his PhD at the University of Otago. His research investigates the art, business and science of winery architecture and their interrelation with place and technology. Tobias Danielmeier’s practical experience includes projects for Reichardt Architekten, Essen, and Bolles+Wilson, Münster.
Hermann Czech studierte Architektur an der Technischen Hochschule und in der Meisterschule von Ernst Plischke an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. 1958 und 1959 war er Seminarteilnehmer bei Konrad Wachsmann an der Sommerakademie in Salzburg. An der Akademie für angewandte Kunst in Wien war er von 1974 bis 1980 Assistent bei Hans Hollein und Johannes Spalt, 1985/86 Gastprofessor an derselben Hochschule. 1988/89 und 1993/94 war er Gastprofessor an der Harvard University in Cambridge/USA, 2004-07 Gastprofessor an der ETH Zürich. Sein ungleichartiges architektonisches Werk umfasst Planungen, Wohn-, Schul- und Hotelbauten ebenso wie Interventionen in kleinem Maßstab und Ausstellungsgestaltungen. Seine Projekte haben starken Bezug zum Kontext und beinhalten bewusst die vorhandenen Widersprüche. Ab den 1970er Jahren (»Architektur ist Hintergrund«) wurde Hermann Czech zum Protagonisten einer neuen, »stillen« Architektur, die »nur spricht, wenn sie gefragt wird«. Er ist Autor zahlreicher kritischer und theoretischer Publikationen zur Architektur. In seiner Theorie spielen die Begriffe Umbau und Manierismus eine zentrale Rolle. Die Diskussionen in der Politik und in der Gesellschaft über Klimawandel, globale Erwärmung oder Nachhaltigkeit, die schon noch länger anhält, werden nie ein Ende finden, solange die Probleme, auf denen sie basiert, unlösbar bleiben. Vorgeschlagene Lösungen werden meist nicht richtig umgesetzt. Im Zusammenhang mit dieser Problematik steigt aber das Verantwortungsgefühl für bessere Zukunftsstrategien immer mehr. Die in den letzten Jahren vorgekommenen Umweltkatastrophen, wie im Golf von Mexiko (April 2010) oder im Fukushima (März 2011) die noch aktuell sind, zeigen, dass der Primärenergieeinsatz oder die Transportproblematik nicht mehr nur die Sorge der Entwicklungsländer, sondern auch der Industrieländer ist. Die Bauwelt mit ihrem erheblichen Energiebedarf spielt bei der Festlegung der Zukunftsstrategien eine große Rolle.
Vor allem sind die Forschungen nach umweltfreundlichen Materialien, der Recyclebarkeit der eingesetzten Baumaterialien oder dem vernünftigen Nutzen der Naturressourcen die wichtigsten Schwerpunkte. In dieser Hinsicht bringt Lehm als Baumaterial viele Vorteile mit sich. Bei einem Artikel sagt der Lehmbauexperte Martin Rauch: “In heutiger Zeit und einem Kulturkreis, in dem Baugrund und Arbeitszeit unsere großen Kosten verursachen, findet der tradierte Lehmbau mit dem verbundenen großen Aufwand an menschlicher Arbeitszeit nur schwer seinen Platz. Über die Art der Bauweise wird auch die Entscheidung gefällt, wie und wo die Wertschöpfung erfolgt und ob der Einsatz des Budgets einen gesellschaftlichen Nutzen mit sich bringt. Im Vergleich zu einem Sichtbetonhaus können bei einem Stampflehmhaus 40% der Primärenergie ein gespart und dafür mehr lokale Arbeitsressourcen gebunden werden. Davon profitieren vor allem die lokalen Handwerker und mittelständischen Betriebe” Anatolien ist der Ort, wo man immer noch die tiefsten Wurzeln der Baukultur menschlicher Geschichte findet. Diese Baukultur, die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten fast verlorengegangen ist, ist die Lehmbaukultur. In dieser Hinsicht beabsichtigt dieser Entwurf die Würde des Lehms in Anatolien wieder herzustellen und dadurch dessen Glaubwürdigkeit zurückzubringen.

SENSORY TECTONICS

Numerical models and their combination with advanced solution strategies are standard tools for many engineering disciplines to design or redesign structures and to optimize designs with the purpose to improve specific requirements. As the successful application of numerical models depends on their suitability to represent the behavior related to the intended use, they should be validated by experimentally obtained results. If the discrepancy between numerically derived and experimentally obtained results is not acceptable, a model revision or a revision of the experiment need to be considered. Model revision is divided into two classes, the model updating and the basic revision of the numerical model. The presented thesis is related to a special branch of model updating, the vibration-based model updating. Vibration-based model updating is a tool to improve the correlation of the numerical model by adjusting uncertain model input parameters by means of results extracted from vibration tests. Evidently, uncertainties related to the experiment, the numerical model, or the applied numerical solving strategies can influence the correctness of the identified model input parameters. The reduction of uncertainties for two critical problems and the quantification of uncertainties related to the investigation of several nominally identical structures are the main emphases of this thesis. First, the reduction of uncertainties by optimizing reference sensor positions is considered. The presented approach relies on predicted power spectral amplitudes and an initial finite element model as a basis to define the assessment criterion for predefined sensor positions. In combination with geometry-based design variables, which represent the sensor positions, genetic and particle swarm optimization algorithms are applied. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical benchmark study of a simply supported beam and a case study of a real test specimen. Furthermore, the theory of determining the predicted power spectral amplitudes is validated with results from vibration tests. Second, the possibility to reduce uncertainties related to an inappropriate assignment for numerically derived and experimentally obtained modes is investigated. In the context of vibration-based model updating, the correct pairing is essential. The most common criterion for indicating corresponding mode shapes is the modal assurance criterion. Unfortunately, this criterion fails in certain cases and is not reliable for automatic approaches. Hence, an alternative criterion, the energy-based modal assurance criterion, is proposed. This criterion combines the mathematical characteristic of orthogonality with the physical properties of the structure by modal strain energies. A numerical example and a case study with experimental data are presented to show the advantages of the proposed energy-based modal assurance criterion in comparison to the traditional modal assurance criterion. Third, the application of optimization strategies combined with information theory based objective functions is analyzed for the purpose of stochastic model updating. This approach serves as an alternative to the common sensitivity-based stochastic model updating strategies. Their success depends strongly on the defined initial model input parameters. In contrast, approaches based on optimization strategies can be more flexible. It can be demonstrated, that the investigated nature inspired optimization strategies in combination with Bhattacharyya distance and Kullback-Leibler divergence are appropriate. The obtained accuracies and the respective computational effort are comparable with sensitivity-based stochastic model updating strategies. The application of model updating procedures to improve the quality and suitability of a numerical model is always related to additional costs. The presented innovative approaches will contribute to reduce and quantify uncertainties within a vibration-based model updating process. Therefore, the increased benefit can compensate the additional effort, which is necessary to apply model updating procedures.

Nathalie Bredella is an architect. She was educated at the TU Berlin and Cooper Union, New York. She received a PhD in Architectural Theory. She taught architectural design at the TU Berlin. She ist the author of Architekturen des Zuschauens. Imaginäre und reale Räume im Film (transcript-verlag). The work is based on an interdisciplinary approach incorporating architecture, film theory and philosophy. Her interests in architectural practice focus on the relationship between spatial strategies, film and media on an urban and architectural scale.

Daniela Brasil is currently a PhD candidate at the professorship of Spatial Planning and Research at Architecture Faculty of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, where she has also been teaching since 2007. Her seminars foster bodily experiments and critical thinking on “city’s sensuality”, where discussions on city marketing and affectivity are central. She was educated in architecture and urbanism in Brazil and Portugal and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Public Art and new artistic strategies. Idealizing and realizing artistic-oriented projects that intervene in relations between bodies and cities is her main concern since the mid-nineties; where she preferably works in transdisciplinary groups, as in “Lisbon Capital of Nothing: create, debate and intervene in public space, Marvila 2001”. Daniela currently runs the project “Baustelle M10 > gallery for contemporary experiments” within a collective of artists and students in Weimar.
This practice-based research examines platforms and encounters that have a participatory character as a strategy to create lived and shared experiences where new forms of appropriation of the city can emerge. The selected case studies propose and initiate certain urban experiences that induce changes in perception, the exchange of perspectives, and that denaturalize habits and patterns of behavior. I suggest that when these sensitive experiences become imprinted in body memory, they can empower citizens to have more active, creative, and/or critical attitudes towards their environments. Searching for new repertoires of everyday practices that contest commodification of both the body and the city, this thesis is oriented towards open-ended processes of constructing mentalities rather than those of planning changes on the material conditions of public space. It uses forms of academic investigation that merge intellectual debate and experimental practice, joining art, urbanism and social engaged practices in an extradisciplinary (Howes 2007) attitude towards the city. Based on the materials generated by the case studies (combining theoretical knowledge with artistic sensibility), the affective and corporeal involvement of researchers in the situations they analyze and co-create, is sustained in opposition to the traditional academic critical distance.
M. Christine Boyer is an urban historian whose interests include the history of the American city, city planning, preservation planning, and computer science. Before coming to Princeton University in 1991, Boyer was professor and chair of the City and Regional Planning Program at Pratt Institute. She was a visiting professor in the Ph.D. program at TU Deflt School of Design for Spring 2005. She has written extensively about American urbanism. Her publications include Dreaming the Rational City: The Myth of American City Planning 1890 –1945 (Cambridge: The MIT Press, 1983), Manhattan Manners: Architecture and Style 1850-1900 (New York: Rizzoli, 1985), The City of Collective Memory (Cambridge: The MIT Press, 1994), and CyberCities (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1996).

Joshua Bolchover is an urban researcher, academic and architectural designer. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, focusing on researching and designing buildings in rural China. In 2010 he exhibited Rural Urban Ecology at the Venice Biennale 2010. He has curated, designed and contributed to several international exhibitions including: Utopia Now: Opening the Closed Area, a research project on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen border at the Venice Biennale 2008; Get it Louder, a touring exhibition in China; Airspace: What Skyline does London want; Hydan; Can Buildings Curate and has exhibited at the HK-SZ Biennale. Joshua was a local curator for the Manchester-Liverpool section of Shrinking Cities between 2003 and 2005. He has collaborated with Raoul Bunschoten, Chora, researching strategic urban projects and has worked with Diller + Scofidio in New York. Joshua has previously taught architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, London Metropolitan University, Cambridge University and the Architectural Association. He was educated at Cambridge University and at the Bartlett School of Architecture. John Lin is an architect based in Hong Kong and a graduate of The Cooper Union in New York City. His experimental constructions have been published in FRAME magazine (2003) and exhibited in the Kolonihaven (Architecture Park) at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen (2004) and the Venice Biennale (2008). Current projects include the design of several school buildings in China. He has taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong.
