Business development and brand management are core functions of a business that fuel corporate growth and drive value for consumers, for companies, and for society. Integrating the two business areas promises synergistic added value that goes beyond their individual impact spectrums. While academic research has collectively advanced our understanding of brand management, research in business development is relatively underrepresented. As a management concept that is of great importance in the corporate world today, the relevance of business development cannot be denied in academia. Moreover, the interrelationship between business development and brand management has been widely neglected. Both business fields benefit from each other, suggesting an exigency for a deeper integration between the two. Towards that goal, this dissertation presents a comprehensive overview of the reciprocal relationship of business development and brand management that further stretches the academic knowledge space.
Throughout the doctoral thesis, the author structures this interrelationship, enhances theory for both business areas and their integration, suggests managerial implications and identifies future research directions that require scholarly attention. The doctoral thesis aims to align business development and brand management theory and practice with the realities of the business world.
In three research papers, this thesis develops an analysis of the reciprocal relationship of business development and brand management. For this purpose, a variety of methods ranging from a systematic literature review and qualitative work to empirical research employing structural equation modeling and experimental studies are applied. Theoretically, business development, innovation management, brand management and sustainability inform the frame of this work. Finally, this research project aims at contributing to (sustainable) business and brand growth.
Increasingly powerful hard- and software allows for the numerical simulation of complex physical phenomena with high levels of detail. In light of this development the definition of numerical models for the Finite Element Method (FEM) has become the bottleneck in the simulation process. Characteristic features of the model generation are large manual efforts and a de-coupling of geometric and numerical model. In the highly probable case of design revisions all steps of model preprocessing and mesh generation have to be repeated. This includes the idealization and approximation of a geometric model as well as the definition of boundary conditions and model parameters. Design variants leading to more resource-efficient structures might hence be disregarded due to limited budgets and constrained time frames.
A potential solution to above problem is given with the concept of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). Core idea of this method is to directly employ a geometric model for numerical simulations, which allows to circumvent model transformations and the accompanying data losses. Basis for this method are geometric models described in terms of Non-uniform rational B-Splines (NURBS). This class of piecewise continuous rational polynomial functions is ubiquitous in computer graphics and Computer-Aided Design (CAD). It allows the description of a wide range of geometries using a compact mathematical representation. The shape of an object thereby results from the interpolation of a set of control points by means of the NURBS functions, allowing efficient representations for curves, surfaces and solid bodies alike. Existing software applications, however, only support the modeling and manipulation of the former two. The description of three-dimensional solid bodies consequently requires significant manual effort, thus essentially forbidding the setup of complex models.
This thesis proposes a procedural approach for the generation of volumetric NURBS models. That is, a model is not described in terms of its data structures but as a sequence of modeling operations applied to a simple initial shape. In a sense this describes the "evolution" of the geometric model under the sequence of operations. In order to adapt this concept to NURBS geometries, only a compact set of commands is necessary which, in turn, can be adapted from existing algorithms. A model then can be treated in terms of interpretable model parameters. This leads to an abstraction from its data structures and model variants can be set up by variation of the governing parameters.
The proposed concept complements existing template modeling approaches: templates can not only be defined in terms of modeling commands but can also serve as input geometry for said operations. Such templates, arranged in a nested hierarchy, provide an elegant model representation. They offer adaptivity on each tier of the model hierarchy and allow to create complex models from only few model parameters. This is demonstrated for volumetric fluid domains used in the simulation of vertical-axis wind turbines. Starting from a template representation of airfoil cross-sections, the complete "negative space" around the rotor blades can be described by a small set of model parameters, and model variants can be set up in a fraction of a second.
NURBS models offer a high geometric flexibility, allowing to represent a given shape in different ways. Different model instances can exhibit varying suitability for numerical analyses. For their assessment, Finite Element mesh quality metrics are regarded. The considered metrics are based on purely geometric criteria and allow to identify model degenerations commonly used to achieve certain geometric features. They can be used to decide upon model adaptions and provide a measure for their efficacy. Unfortunately, they do not reveal a relation between mesh distortion and ill-conditioning of the equation systems resulting from the numerical model.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit „Speaking from Somewhere: Der Audio-Walk als künstlerische Praxis und Methode“ wird der Audio-Walk auf theoretischer und praktischer Basis untersucht. Der erste Teil widmet sich dem Audio-Walk als künstlerisches Format. Darin wird analysiert, wie dieses aufgebaut ist und welche Komponenten wie zusammenwirken, damit sich die Darbietung – und die dafür charakteristisch intensive Wirkung – entfalten kann. Im zweiten Teil wird der Audio-Walk als experimentelle mobile Methode für die künstlerische Forschung betrachtet. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, wie sich das künstlerische Format nutzen lässt, um spezifische Fragestellungen an einen ausgewählten Personenkreis zu adressieren, der sich währenddessen in einer inszenierten Situation befindet. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Audio-Walk-Experimenten, die mit dieser Absicht entwickelt wurden. Als Fallbeispiel für die Methode dient dabei die Zusammenarbeit mit einer Gruppe kürzlich nach Deutschland migrierter Frauen.
Am Beispiel der Elektrifizierung zweier Großstädte an der Westküste Südamerikas zeigt die Arbeit den globalen Einfluss deutscher Industrie- und Finanzakteure auf technische, städtebauliche und gesellschaftlich-kulturelle Entwicklungen zur Blütezeit des europäischen Imperialismus auf. Damit werden die Regionalgeschichten der chilenischen Hauptstadtregion und der Elektropolis Berlin zu einer Globalgeschichte miteinander verknüpft. Ein Hauptaugenmerk der Analyse liegt dabei auf den weltweiten Akteursnetzwerken und Machtverhältnissen sowie dem kulturellen Erbe und seiner gegenwärtigen Interpretation.
Modellbildung und computergestütztes Modellieren in frühen Phasen des architektonischen Entwurfs

Die Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Konzeption und exemplarischen Realisierung von CAD-Tools zur Unterstützung des konzeptionellen Entwurfs von Gebäuden. Die Spezifik des Bauentwurfs macht eine Analyse des Arbeitsfelds "früher architektonischer Entwurf" aus Sicht der Informationsverarbeitung nichtig. Auf der Grundlage einer Untersuchung des Entwurfsprozesses aus pragmatischer und kognitiver Sicht wird ein generisches Prozeßmodell "Entwurf" abgeleitet und mit Beispielen belegt. Ausgehend von der Auffassung, daß Entwerfen der Prozesse das Vorausdenken von Bauwerken in Modellen ist, wird die "objektorientierte Modellierungstechnologie" einer eingehenden Bewertung unterzogen. Ihre methodische Eignung zur modellhaften Abbildung von Bauwerken wird grundsätzlich nachgewiesen. Mit Blick auf die spezifischen Gegebenheiten der frühen Entwurfsphasen, wie Unschärfe und nicht formalisiert darstellbarer Informationen, werden einige Erweiterungen vorgeschlagen und experimentiert. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, ein multipel und über lange Zeiträume auswertbares Bauwerksmodell zu schaffen, um Planungsprozesse über den gesamten Bauwerkslebenszyklus durchgängig zu unterstützen. Grundlage des Entwerfens mittels der objektorientierten Methodik sind generalisierte Domänenmodelle. Es wird gezeigt, daß für eine Interpretation konkreter Bauwerksmodelle die generalisierten Domänenmodelle entweder zu normieren sind oder aber daß sie explizit verfügbar sein müssen. Die Objektorientierung bietet die Möglichkeit, sowohl konkrete als auch generalisierte Modelle in einem einheitlichen Metamodell zu beschreiben...
In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Bedeutung und Funktion des fotografischen Bildes und im Besonderen der Handyfotografie im Kontext von Internet und sozialen Onlinenetzwerken beschrieben, untersucht und diskutiert.
Im Spannungsfeld zwischen sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorien, foto- und medientheoretischem Diskurs sowie ästhetisch künstlerischen Perspektiven wird ausgelotet, welche konkreten visuellen und sozialen Formen die gegenwärtige mobile digitale Bildpraxis angenommen hat, wie sich ihre Gebrauchsweise innerhalb des globalen gesellschaftlichen Alltags darstellt, und in welcher Weise ihr spezielles Zusammenspiel aus „shooting“, „uploading“, „sharing“ zu neuen menschlichen Handlungsmustern und zur Schaffung neuer kultureller Realitäten beiträgt.
The world society faces a huge challenge to implement the human right of “access to sanitation”. More and more it is accepted that the conventional approach towards providing sanitation services is not suitable to solve this problem. This dissertation examines the possibility to enhance “access to sanitation” for people who are living in areas with underdeveloped water and wastewater infrastructure systems. The idea hereby is to follow an integrated approach for sanitation, which allows for a mutual completion of existing infrastructure with resource-based sanitation systems.
The notion “integrated sanitation system (iSaS)” is defined in this work and guiding principles for iSaS are formulated. Further on the implementation of iSaS is assessed at the example of a case study in the city of Darkhan in Mongolia. More than half of Mongolia’s population live in settlements where yurts (tents of Nomadic people) are predominant. In these settlements (or “ger areas”) sanitation systems are not existent and the hygienic situation is precarious.
An iSaS has been developed for the ger areas in Darkhan and tested over more than two years. Further on a software-based model has been developed with the goal to describe and assess different variations of the iSaS. The results of the assessment of material-flows, monetary-flows and communication-flows within the iSaS are presented in this dissertation. The iSaS model is adaptable and transferable to the socio-economic conditions in other regions and climate zones.
Communities in discourse and space. Towards a spatial dialectic in gated residential developments

This research projects deals with the discoursivity of spatial production.
By looking at contemporary residential development in the city of Istanbul, I will examine the reciprocity of the material production of space on one hand, and social discourses on the other, in order to make a contribution to how physical space can be used as a source of research in urban studies. In real estate marketing social discourses are used as a source of reference for place branding or identity design. Branding concepts therefore relate to how social groups imagine their position or future position in society, imaginaries that are continuously influenced and changed by social dynamics within the city but also from the outside. How such urban identities are formed and it what way they relate to the urban environment is crucial to a wide spectrum of social and cultural science. The constitutive role urban space attains has been described and analysed in much detail. Such scrutiny however has yet to be applied to the visual and communicative forms of engagement, the build environment partakes in the formation and change of social discourses.
This thesis explores how cultural heritage plays a role in the development of urban identity by engaging both actively and passively with memory, i.e. remembering and forgetting. I argue that architectural heritage is a medium where specific cultural and social decisions form its way of presentation, and it reflects the values and interests of the period. By the process of remembering and forgetting, the meanings between inhabitant and object in urban environment are practiced, and the meanings are created.
To enable the research in narrative observation, cultural tourism management is chosen as the main research object, which reflects the alteration of interaction between the architectural heritage and urban identity. Identifying the role of heritage management, the definition of social resilience and the prospects of cultural heritage as a means of social resilience are addressed. Case region of the research is East Ger- many, thereby, the study examines the distinct approaches and objectives regarding heritage management under the different political systems along the German reunification process.
The framework is based on various theoretical paradigms to investigate the broad research questions: 1) What is the role of historic urban quarters in the revitalisation of East German towns? 2) How was the transition processed by cultural heritage management? 3) How did policy affect residents’ lives?
The case study is applied to macro level (city level: Gotha and Eisenach) and micro level study (object level: specific heritage sites), to analyse the performance of selective remembering and making tourist destination through giving significance to specific heritage. By means of site observations, archival research, qualitative inter- views, photographs, and discourse analysis on printed tourism materials, the study demonstrates that certain sites and characteristics of the city enable creating and focusing messages, which aids the social resilience.
Combining theory and empirical studies this thesis attempts to widen the academic discussion regarding the practice of remembering and forgetting driven by cultural heritage. The thesis argues for cultural heritage tourism as an element of social resilience and one that embraces the historic and cultural identity of the inhabitants.
