Uniform Material Law (UML) is a handy and user-friendly method since only the tensile strength data of the material is needed for estimation of the strain-life curve, in contrast to other methods, such as four-point correlation method, universal slopes method, Mitchell's method, modified universal slopes method, which also require the data of the reduction in area or the fracture ductility of the material. On the other hand, the error level of UML estimations can be still decreased by refining the method. The objective of this thesis is putting forward a more refined method by extending conventional UML. Furthermore, a life prediction computation is carried out with the proposed extended UML and the results are compared to that of the conventional method. The results have proven that the maximum error is dropped down to 0.59% from 38% with the proposed extended UML method.
The theme of this project is the colonial history of the natural rubber industry. It focuses on two species of tropical plants: Ficus elastica and Hevea brasiliensis. Geographically their native habitat is very distant from each other, but they connect by European influence through the exploitation of latex.
The many forms and outcomes from this work manifest the attempt of the artist to create an association between a common household plant, the origin of its name, and the source of rubber. As a ghostly connective tissue, the latex surrounds reconstructed history, old prints, live plants, and drawings, accepting the material's capacity to both erase and preserve the past.
The intention of this thesis is first, to determine material constants of ductile cast irons (EN-GJS-400-15,EN-GJS-500-7, EN-GJS-600-3) for estimating fatigue damage. These constants are obtained from experimental results. These results are stress versus strain tests, strain versus crack initiation life tests, and consequently, Smith, Watson and Topper damage parameter, PSWT can be calculated. Using data fitting, the constants can be estimated, thus Uniform Material Law for ductile cast irons is fulfilled. Endurance limit stress is obtained based on research report termed Synthetic Wöhler Lines(SWL).It is found out that the endurance limit stress is a function of yield limit stress. Endurance life cycle is set as three millions for the three materials. Secondly, fatigue life assessment is done for diesel engine pump part made of the three ductile cast irons. Finite element calculation is done to get elastic stress concentration factor, Kt, and plastic notch factor Kp. Neuber ´s rule is used to determine local stress at notch subjected to constant amplitude load test and variable amplitude loading. The constant amplitude loading is conducted at a stress ratio of R=0 on the pump part. The test results show that fatigue life assessment based on the material constants is accurate. On the basis of the accuracy of constant amplitude test results, it is possible to determine for fatigue life for variable amplitude loading which is the real loading on the pump part. The variable amplitude loading is normally standardized for computational efficiency. This standardized loading is termed as CORAL (COmmon RAil Loading) sequence. CORAL is used to calculate fatigue life of pump part and is inputted to a Fatigue Life Evaluation computer program. This program uses rain flow cycle counting method. It can be concluded that the material constants for ductile cast irons fit well which is proved by experimental tests by constant amplitude loading on pump part. Then life prediction can be done for the typical pump loading, standardized variable amplitude loading known as CORAL

This master thesis explores an important and under-researched topic on the so-called bridging of length scales (from >meso< to >macro<), with the concept of homogenization in which the careful characterization of mechanical response requires that the developed material model >bridge< the representations of events that occur at two different scales. The underlying objective here is to efficiently incorporate material length scales in the classical continuum plasticity/damage theories through the concept of homogenization theory. The present thesis is devoted to computational modeling of heterogeneous materials, primarily to matrix-inclusion type of materials. Considerations are focused predominantly on the elastic and damage behavior as a response to quasistatic mechanical loading. Mainly this thesis focuses to elaborate a sound numerical homogenization model which accounts for the prediction of overall properties with the application of different types of boundary conditions namely: periodic, homogeneous and mixed type of boundary conditions over two-dimensional periodic and non-periodic RVEs and three-dimensional non-periodic RVEs. Identification of the governing mechanisms and assessing their effect on the material behavior leads one step further. Bringing together this knowledge with service requirements allows for functional oriented materials design. First, this thesis gives attention on providing the theoretical basic mechanisms involved in homogenization techniques and a survey will be made on existing analytical methods available in literature. Second, the proposed frameworks are implemented in the well known finite element software programs ANSYS and SLang. Simple and efficient algorithms in FORTRAN are developed for automated microstructure generation using RSA algorithm in order to perform a systematic numerical testing of microstructures of composites. Algorithms are developed to generate constraint equations in periodic boundary conditions and different displacements applied spatially over the boundaries of the RVE in homogeneous boundary conditions. Finally, nonlinear simulations are performed at mesolevel, by considering continuum scalar damage behavior of matrix material with the linear elastic behavior of aggregates with the assumption of rigid bond between constituents.
This report details the development of Horoskopos, a virtual planetarium for astrology. This project was an attempt to develop a learning tool for studying astrological concepts as connected to observational astronomy. The premise that astrology and observational astronomy were once inseparable from each other in ancient times guided the conceptualization of this tool as an interactive planetarium. The main references were existing software and applications for visualization in astrology and astronomy. Professional astrology teachers were consulted in order to understand better the state of astrological teaching and learning, as well as existing tools and practice. Horoskopos was built using the Unity3D development interface, which is based on the C# programming language. It also relied on the Swiss Ephemeris coding interface from Astrodienst. The development process was experimental and many of the needed skills were developed as needed. Usability tests were performed as new features were added to the interface. The final version of Horoskopos is fully usable, with many interactive visualization features and a defined visual identity. It was validated together with professional astrologers for its effectiveness in concept and visualization.
The hydraulic properties of the polymer-enhanced bentonite-sand mixtures (PEBSMs) investigated in this study consisted of the water retention behaviour (or the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC)) and the saturated and unsaturated coefficients of permeability. The SWCCs of the compacted polymer-enhanced bentonite-sand mixtures were measured using two techniques; namely, axis-translation technique and vapour equilibrium technique. The results obtained from both methods were combined to establish a single SWCC for each specimen. The saturated coefficient of permeability of the material was measured using the constant-head flexible wall permeameter method. The unsaturated coefficient of permeability was computed from the SWCCs and the saturated permeability values using the statistical model. The study revealed that the wetting curves for the PEBSM and clay are above the drying curves. The fact is thought be due to the specimens being not saturated before starting the drying tests. Since the specimens are expensive soil such a trend can be expected. The permeability deduced from the oedometer test data over-estimates the actual water flow rate resulting in a higher computed saturated coefficient of permeability compared to the measured values. The nets of polymer and bentonite clusters are thought to retard the flow of water during the direct measurement. However, the net of polymer and bentonite clusters are compressed during loading and rebound during unloading. Hysteresis effect was found for the PEBSMs in the permeability versus degree of saturation curve. This is due to possible difference in the spatial distribution of water in the specimens depending whether the specimens were on drying or wetting path.
