Generalised models and computer aided modelling in early stages of architectural design

Some prototypical implementations make the concept clear. Buildings are a special matter for design activities. That is the reason why an analysis is necessary especially for the early design stages. The objective of that analysis is that CAD-tools for this design stage can be implemented. The topic "design" has two aspects: the design process and the object models. An examination of the design process is the basis for the suggested "generic design Process model". The starting point for the examination is the pragmatic process model on the one hand and the cognitive process model on the other hand. The "generic process model" consists of "atomic design activities" which are illustrated by examples. Starting with the thesis architectural design is a process to plan a building in advance with help of models, the object oriented modelling technology is thoroughly evaluated. The suitability of the method is generally proofed for the representation of buildings by analogical models. Models in early phases of architectural design have some special features like fuzziness, abstraction and unformaliseable information. As regards these special features, some extensions of the modelling method are suggested and experimentally evaluated. The objective of this work is to support planning and management processes during the whole building life cycle. Therefore the models have to be structured in a way that it becomes possible to interpret and evaluate building models during this long period. Generalised domain models are the basis for a design with the help of the object oriented design method. For an interpretation of a model for an existing or virtual building it is necessary either to standardise the domain model or to provide an explicit, accessible domain model. The object oriented paradigm provides the possibility to describe both generalised models (knowledge) and their instanciation (concrete building models)...show moreshow less
