N2 - In structural mechanics, boundary value problems with geometrical singularities require advanced mathematical modeling techniques and especially adapted numerical methods in order to obtain a precise description of the singular near field. This doctoral thesis deals with a systematic approach to a spatial analog of the method of complex stress functions. Here, the main focus is on the generalization of the mathematical method in consideration of the practical applicability. The theoretical framework is therefore constituted by methods of hypercomplex function theory in particular the theory of quaternion-valued functions. Thus, the class of monogenic functions is methodically used in the first part of the thesis to prove a spatial counterpart of Goursat's representation theorem that enables the construction of generalized Kolosov-Muskhelishvili formulae in three dimensions. The second part of the thesis is concerned with the local and global approximation of monogenic functions. In this context, new monogenic representation formulae of the canonical series expansions (Taylor, Fourier, Laurent) are defined by using complete orthogonal systems of solid spherical monogenics. These monogenic orthogonal series generalize the important structural properties of the complex-one-dimensional power and Laurent series expansions concerning the hypercomplex derivative and the monogenic primitive. Finally, representative examples are studied to evaluate the function-theoretical methods constructed here by means of their qualitative and numerical characteristics. In this connection, some further fields of application in the framework of hypercomplex function theory are considered, which essentially need the specific structural properties of the monogenic power and Laurent series expansions. N2 - From a technical and economical point of view it is necessary to examine the operational life of high strength components. This work will develop scientific bases for it. The technical development of high pressure components in particular for diesel engines leads to ever increasing pressures and thereby becoming a growing challenge in the evaluation of the design strength. The possibilities of increasing fatigue in high components such as an increase in wall thickness or the use of higher materials strengths is limited. The Autofrettage is currently widely used in the industry. This procedure creates a single static overload deep into the component reaching pressure residual stress fields which lead to a significant increase in fatigue, especially in the crack growth. Currently reliable lifetime prediction methods for this phase do not exist. They are presented in this work and developed the basis of verified experimental results. An engineering approach was used for the calculation procedures. However the aim is to show all relevant effects without introducing a complex model. The selected modules are calculated after analysis of the literature. This includes the calculation of Autofrettage stress, the stress intensity, the crack opening and closing behaviour of the crack growth. The residual stress calculation module for Autofrettage is based on the superposition of Autofrettage load as well as discharge and makes it possible to consider the Bauschinger effect. Stress intensities are identified with a 3-D weight function for a plane crack under mode I stress because due to the symmetry of the highest pressure components the stable long crack growth only takes place under stress mode I. The crack opening and closing effects are reproduced with approximation equations. In the application of this approximation, the crack opening relations by Ibrahim et. al. has proven to be best suitable when comparing the arithmetic with the experimental lifes. In the analyzed material 42CrMo4 overload and underload effects play a minor role and are thus not modelled. The phrasing of the Paris-Erdogan relationship for effective stress intensity factor was used for the crack growth relationship. The calculation modules are selected after analyzing the literature; however this configuration in this context it represents a new approach. Since the individual modules can merely be verified on a small scale, the calculation method can only be checked in its entirety by the comparison of experimental to predicted life and fatigue. The influence on the calculated crack growth life and fatigue can be shown in various sensitivity analyses when taken the following calculation parameters into account: crack opening relation, crack start length, fracture toughness, crack growth equation and threshold. Thus, the threshold of the stress intensity has little influence on the prediction cracks fatigue stoppage of auto-fretted cross bores as the crack opening force is very close to the maximum pressure. For example another sensitivity analysis shows that the longest crack growth longevity result when using the crack opening relations by Ibrahim et. al. as this relation predicts the crack opening pressures. In total 14 test series of cross borings were carried out for the verification of the calculation procedure for the threshold of the inner pressure experiments. The general applicability of the calculation process was demonstrated through the application of cross-drilling from the research projects Autofrettage I-III on Rail pieces and high pressure distribution parts. Once again, the verification is based on extensive experimental results. The statistical analysis of the ratio of predicted to experimental lifes and fatigue strength of all investigated crossbores shows a suitable prediction quality for mean value with low dispersion. This demonstrates the performance of the proposed life prediction method. ER - TY - THES A1 - Kurukuri, Srihari T1 - Homogenization of Damaged Concrete Mesostructures using Representative Volume Elements - Implementation and Application to SLang N2 - This master thesis explores an important and under-researched topic on the so-called bridging of length scales (from >meso< to >macro<), with the concept of homogenization in which the careful characterization of mechanical response requires that the developed material model >bridge< the representations of events that occur at two different scales. The underlying objective here is to efficiently incorporate material length scales in the classical continuum plasticity/damage theories through the concept of homogenization theory. The present thesis is devoted to computational modeling of heterogeneous materials, primarily to matrix-inclusion type of materials. Considerations are focused predominantly on the elastic and damage behavior as a response to quasistatic mechanical loading. Mainly this thesis focuses to elaborate a sound numerical homogenization model which accounts for the prediction of overall properties with the application of different types of boundary conditions namely: periodic, homogeneous and mixed type of boundary conditions over two-dimensional periodic and non-periodic RVEs and three-dimensional non-periodic RVEs. Identification of the governing mechanisms and assessing their effect on the material behavior leads one step further. Bringing together this knowledge with service requirements allows for functional oriented materials design. First, this thesis gives attention on providing the theoretical basic mechanisms involved in homogenization techniques and a survey will be made on existing analytical methods available in literature. Second, the proposed frameworks are implemented in the well known finite element software programs ANSYS and SLang. Simple and efficient algorithms in FORTRAN are developed for automated microstructure generation using RSA algorithm in order to perform a systematic numerical testing of microstructures of composites. Algorithms are developed to generate constraint equations in periodic boundary conditions and different displacements applied spatially over the boundaries of the RVE in homogeneous boundary conditions. Finally, nonlinear simulations are performed at mesolevel, by considering continuum scalar damage behavior of matrix material with the linear elastic behavior of aggregates with the assumption of rigid bond between constituents. N2 - In the dissertation a spatial model for the anisotropic, porous material wood is presented. The efficiency of this numerical approach is pointed out by verifying computations and simulations of own experiments. In these tests the load carrying behaviour of special joining techniques for laminated timber concrete composite constructions have been examined. The combination of a laminated timber element with a shear resistant joined concrete slab is a profitable alternative for effectively using lumber with small cross section in bending stressed members. The results of the experimental investigations of flat-steel-lock and notch connection are presented. These are characterised by a load transmission via contact pressure continuously over the entire slab width. Particularly in laminated timber concrete composite ceilings a very stiff load-deflection relationship as well as an eminent load-carrying capacity is reached. To simulate the structural behaviour of members and to model there failure mechanisms it is necessary to take the mechanically nonlinear behaviour in the critical and post critical range of all involved materials into account. For this reason a constitutive material model for timber based on the plasticity theory was implemented in the finite element code ANSYS. The basic multisurface yield criterion considers the interaction of all six components of the spatial stress state. The proposal is furthermore based on the classic continuum mechanics. Therefore, a crack is not described discretely, but by its effect on the stress deformation behaviour. The numerical model reproduces the wood-specific anisotropic, load dependent strengths as well as predominantly independent proceeding of strain hardening and, respectively, softening. The conducted verifications and simulations prove, that the designed approach can be applied to the evaluation of the load-carrying behaviour as well as crack and damage causes of timber components. The numerical simulation opens new potentialities for investigation of complex wooden structures as well as connection details. Compared with expensive experimental studies this procedure will gain more significance due to its expressiveness and flexibility even in timber engineering. Basically it is defined of the normal and shear stresses of a cohesive crack with the corresponding displacements in normal and tangential direction. For the load state there can be considered three cases of loading: pure tension, shear-tension and shear-compression. In the softening state of quasi-brittle materials like concrete there are be mould physical effects like dilatancy by shearing deformations, nevertheless no dilatancy under very high compression can be performed. By this way it is additionally possible to simulate extended roughness at the contact surface besides the coulomb criteria as it exists in real cracking deformations of structures characterized by sensitive material behavior. To enable this goal in context of smeared crack analysis a special feature in combined activating Mode I and Mode II fracture energies (mixed mode cracking) is used. \\ After presenting this model a direct way for implementation as a constitutive law based for interface elements will be realized. ER - TY - THES A1 - Malik, Irfan T1 - An adaptive contact formulation for Isogeometric Finite Element Analysis N2 - Numerical simulation of physical phenomena, like electro-magnetics, structural and fluid mechanics is essential for the cost- and time-efficient development of mechanical products at high quality. It allows to investigate the behavior of a product or a system far before the first prototype of a product is manufactured. This thesis addresses the simulation of contact mechanics. Mechanical contacts appear in nearly every product of mechanical engineering. Gearboxes, roller bearings, valves and pumps are only some examples. Simulating these systems not only for the maximal/minimal stresses and strains but for the stress-distribution in case of tribo-contacts is a challenging task from a numerical point of view. Classical procedures like the Finite Element Method suffer from the nonsmooth representation of contact surfaces with discrete Lagrange elements. On the one hand, an error due to the approximate description of the surface is introduced. On the other hand it is difficult to attain a robust contact search because surface normals can not be described in a unique form at element edges. This thesis introduces therefore a novel approach, the adaptive isogeometric contact formulation based on polynomial Splines over hierarchical T-meshes (PHT-Splines), for the approximate solution of the non-linear contact problem. It provides a more accurate, robust and efficient solution compared to conventional methods. During the development of this method the focus was laid on the solution of static contact problems without friction in 2D and 3D in which the structures undergo small deformations. The mathematical description of the problem entails a system of partial differential equations and boundary conditions which model the linear elastic behaviour of continua. Additionally, it comprises side conditions, the Karush-Kuhn-Tuckerconditions, to prevent the contacting structures from non-physical penetration. The mathematical model must be transformed into its integral form for approximation of the solution. Employing a penalty method, contact constraints are incorporated by adding the resulting equations in weak form to the overall set of equations. For an efficient space discretization of the bulk and especially the contact boundary of the structures, the principle of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is applied. Isogeometric Finite Element Methods provide several advantages over conventional Finite Element discretization. Surface approximation with Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) allow a robust numerical solution of the contact problem with high accuracy in terms of an exact geometry description including the surface smoothness. The numerical evaluation of the contact integral is challenging due to generally non-conforming meshes of the contacting structures. In this work the highly accurate Mortar Method is applied in the isogeometric setting for the evaluation of contact contributions. This leads to an algebraic system of equations that is linearized and solved in sequential steps. This procedure is known as the Newton Raphson Method. Based on numerical examples, the advantages of the isogeometric approach with classical refinement strategies, like the p- and h-refinement, are shown and the influence of relevant algorithmic parameters on the approximate solution of the contact problem is verified. One drawback of the Spline approximations of stresses though is that they lack accuracy at the contact edge where the structures change their boundary from contact to no contact and where the solution features a kink. The approximation with smooth Spline functions yields numerical artefacts in the form of non-physical oscillations. This property of the numerical solution is not only a drawback for the simulation of e.g. tribological contacts, it also influences the convergence properties of iterative solution procedures negatively. Hence, the NURBS discretized geometries are transformed to Polynomial Splines over Hierarchical T-meshes (PHT-Splines), for the local refinement along contact edges to reduce the artefact of pressure oscillations. NURBS have a tensor product structure which does not allow to refine only certain parts of the geometrical domain while leaving other parts unchanged. Due to the Bézier Extraction, lying behind the transformation from NURBS to PHT-Splines, the connected mesh structure is broken up into separate elements. This allows an efficient local refinement along the contact edge. Before single elements are refined in a hierarchical form with cross-insertion, existing basis functions must be modified or eliminated. This process of truncation assures local and global linear independence of the refined basis which is needed for a unique approximate solution. The contact boundary is a priori unknown. Local refinement along the contact edge, especially for 3D problems, is for this reason not straight forward. In this work the use of an a posteriori error estimation procedure, the Super Convergent Recovery Solution Based Error Estimation Scheme, together with the Dörfler Marking Method is suggested for the spatial search of the contact edge. Numerical examples show that the developed method improves the quality of solutions along the contact edge significantly compared to NURBS based approximate solutions. Also, the error in maximum contact pressures, which correlates with the pressure artefacts, is minimized by the adaptive local refinement. In a final step the practicability of the developed solution algorithm is verified by an industrial application: The highly loaded mechanical contact between roller and cam in the drive train of a high-pressure fuel pump is considered. N2 - The relation between damage and the changing of dynamic and static properties of R/C structures is investigated. On the one side static experiments in relation with dynamic experiments of R/C structures (plates and beams) are performed. On the other side a nonlinear Stochastic Finite Element Model is developed. The model considers stochastic material and strength properties by spatial correlated random fields. So a random crack evolution for the R/C beams are simulated. As Monte Carlo Method Latin Hypercube Sampling is used to calculate a lot of samples and so various "live histories" of the structure. The evaluation of structure response for the load history indicates the influence of stochastic properties on the damage evolution. The work gives a contribution to the assessment and the use of dynamic investigation methods in the future in civil engineering. T1 - Implicit solutions with consistent additive and multiplicative components JF - Finite Elements in Analysis and Design N2 - This work describes an algorithm and corresponding software for incorporating general nonlinear multiple-point equality constraints in a implicit sparse direct solver. It is shown that direct addressing of sparse matrices is possible in general circumstances, circumventing the traditional linear or binary search for introducing (generalized) constituents to a sparse matrix. Nested and arbitrarily interconnected multiple-point constraints are introduced by processing of multiplicative constituents with a built-in topological ordering of the resulting directed graph. A classification of discretization methods is performed and some re-classified problems are described and solved under this proposed perspective. The dependence relations between solution methods, algorithms and constituents becomes apparent. Fracture algorithms can be naturally casted in this framework. Solutions based on control equations are also directly incorporated as equality constraints. We show that arbitrary constituents can be used as long as the resulting directed graph is acyclic. It is also shown that graph partitions and orderings should be performed in the innermost part of the algorithm, a fact with some peculiar consequences. The core of our implicit code is described, specifically new algorithms for direct access of sparse matrices (by means of the clique structure) and general constituent processing. It is demonstrated that the graph structure of the second derivatives of the equality constraints are cliques (or pseudo-elements) and are naturally included as such. A complete algorithm is presented which allows a complete automation of equality constraints, avoiding the need of pre-sorting. Verification applications in four distinct areas are shown: single and multiple rigid body dynamics, solution control and computational fracture. T1 - A Stillinger-Weber Potential for Single-Layer Black Phosphorus, and the Importance of Cross-Pucker Interactions for Negative Poisson's Ratio and Edge Stress-Induced Bending JF - Nanoscale N2 - The distinguishing structural feature of single-layered black phosphorus is its puckered structure, which leads to many novel physical properties. In this work, we first present a new parameterization of the Stillinger–Weber potential for single-layered black phosphorus. In doing so, we reveal the importance of a cross-pucker interaction term in capturing its unique mechanical properties, such as a negative Poisson's ratio. In particular, we show that the cross-pucker interaction enables the pucker to act as a re-entrant hinge, which expands in the lateral direction when it is stretched in the longitudinal direction. As a consequence, single-layered black phosphorus has a negative Poisson's ratio in the direction perpendicular to the atomic plane. As an additional demonstration of the impact of the cross-pucker interaction, we show that it is also the key factor that enables capturing the edge stress-induced bending of single-layered black phosphorus that has been reported in ab initio calculations. The overlap percentages ranged from 40% to 80% in increments of 10%. The new material properties of the fused metal were characterized using Weldware and their continuous cooling transformation curves. The convective and radiative heat transfer coefficients as well as the cooling time t8/5 were estimated using numerical formulations from relevant standards. The effects of the simulation geometry and mesh discretization were evaluated in terms of the factor F provided in Sysweld. Eventually, the parameters of Goldak’s double ellipsoidal heat source model were determined for the welding simulation of overlapping beads on the plate and the simulated bead geometry, extent of the molten pool and the HAZ were compared with the macrographs of cross-sections of the experimental weldments. The results showed excellent matching, thus verifying this methodology for determination of welding heat source parameters. The dependence of the cohesive energy on their size, spacing and crossing angles is analyzed. Checking against full atom molecular dynamics calculations and available experimental results shows that the continuum solution has high accuracy. The equilibrium distances between the nanotubes, graphene and substrates with minimum cohesive energy are also provided explicitly. The obtained analytical solution should be of great help for understanding the interaction between the nanostructures and substrates, and designing composites and nanoelectromechanical systems.
