TY - THES A1 - Düring, Serjoscha T1 - Between plan and reality: tracing the development dynamics of the Lanzhou New Area - a computational approach N2 - Contemporary planning practice is often criticized as too design-driven with a lack of both quantitative evaluation criteria and employment of models that anticipate the self-organizational forces shaping cities, resulting in significant gaps between plan and reality. This study aims to introduce a modular toolbox prototype for spatial-analysis in data-poor environments. It is proposed to integrate designing, evaluation, and monitoring of urban development into one framework, thus supporting data-driven, on-demand urban design, and planning processes. The proposed framework’s value will exemplarily be tested, focussing on the analysis and simulation of spatiotemporal growth trajectories taking the Lanzhou New Area as a case-study - a large scale new town project that struggles to attract residents and businesses. Conducted analysis suggests that more attention should be given to spatiotemporal development paths to ensure that cities work more efficiently throughout any stage of development. Finally, early hints on general design strategies to achieve this goal are discussed with the assistance of the proposed toolbox. Analysis of the essential qualities of urban space could be made both more effective and more accurate using innovative information techniques that have become available in the era of big data. This study introduces an integrated method based on geographical information systems (GIS) and an emotion-tracking technique to quantify the relationship between people’s emotional responses and urban space. This method can evaluate the degree to which people’s emotional responses are influenced by multiple urban characteristics such as building shapes and textures, isovist parameters, visual entropy, and visual fractals. The results indicate that urban spaces may influence people’s emotional responses through both spatial sequence arrangements and shifting scenario sequences. Emotional data were collected with body sensors and GPS devices. Spatial clustering was detected to target effective sampling locations; then, isovists were generated to extract building textures. Logistic regression and a receiver operating characteristic analysis were used to determine the key isovist parameters and the probabilities that they influenced people’s emotion. Finally, based on the results, we make some suggestions for design professionals in the field of urban space optimization. We found in the study that the electricity consumption per capita has a tendency that is higher in city center and lower in suburbs in Utsunomiya city. It is also noted that there is little difference among total consumption between city center and suburbs, despite the fact that the density of electric appliances tends to increase in a small size house of city center and the amount of automobile energy consumption from residence is lower in city center than in suburbs. Route guide maps are provided through Web or a mobile phone services, and demand for such services is increasing. However, the production of a route guide map requires a great deal of time. Therefore, it is difficult for general users to make route guide maps. The purpose of the present research is the development of a system that can generate a route guide map using the Digital Map 2500 (Spatial Data Framework) published by the Geographical Survey Institute. This system will not require advanced equipment or expert knowledge. Therefore, anyone can produce route guide maps easily and quickly. By using the Digital Map 2500, the time and cost required in order to generate a map are reduced. Moreover, a useful route guide map can be created by simplifying the map form based on the human cognitive map. N2 - Topic of the paper is a discussion about the possibilities and boundaries of a new age in interface-design - the age of Desktop-VR interfaces. The important basis of this approach of interface-design is the use of a metaphor. One part of this paper deals with the classification of metaphors and gives a guideline which kind of metaphor fits to which kind of information / application. If you combine this two features (kind of metaphor, kind of information) you can get four different kinds of virtual environments. The features and characteristics of this four special virtual environments will be presented. Examples from the field of city-information-systems will be discussed. The field of city-information-system-application will used for a practical examine. Therefore a statistical evaluation of questionnaire about city-information-systems was realised.
