N2 - The inaugural dissertation, produced according to the cumulative approach, organises the author’s scientific writings produced between the years 1995 and 1999 into three chapters. Chapter 1 is concerned with questions of integrating energy-saving, resource friendly and health-oriented approaches to building into the planning and decision-making processes. Methodical approaches to determining and evaluating energy and mass flow during the life-cycle of buildings are discussed, a framework for energy-related limit and target values examined and available planning aids and assessment tools analysed. In chapter 2 a system for ensuring quality control in the planning and construction of low-energy houses is introduced and its correspondence to energy passports and building certification methods discussed. Close cooperation of engineers in different fields is the basis of high product quality, short development periods and a minimum of investment costs. For each building the engineers have to create a new fire engineering model. The consistent realization of the fire engineering model in all details has high demands on communication, collaboration and building models. Thereby, to preserve the related design models consistent to each other and compatible with the rules of fire engineering is a complex task. In addition, regulations and guidelines vary according to the building location, so the knowledge base must be integrated dynamically into the planning process. This contribution covers the integration of engineers and design models into a cooperation network on the basis of mobile agents. The distributed models of architectural design, structural planning and fire engineering are supported. These models are implemented as XML-based models which can be accessed by mobile agents for information retrieval and for processing tasks. Agents are provided to all planners, they are enabled to check up the distributed design models with the knowledge base of the fire protection regulations,. With the use of such an agent each planner is supported to check up his planning for accordance with the fire protection requirements. The fire-engineering-agent analyzes the design and detects inconsistencies by processing fire protection requirements and design model facts in a rule-based expert system. The possibility to check the planning information at an early state in the sense of compatibility to the fire protection regulations enables a comprehensive diagnosis of the design and the reduction of planning errors. The resulting consortium has large pool of expertise and experience and can be defined as a Virtual Organisation (VO) formed for the duration of the project. This paper describes the design, development and implementation of a Grid enabled application called the Product Supplier Catalogue Database (PSCD) which supports collaborative working in consortia. As part of the Grid-enabling process, specialised metadata is being developed to enable PSCD to effectively utilise Grid middleware such as Globus and Java CoG toolkits. We also describe our experience whilst designing, developing and deploying the security service of the application using the Globus Security Interface (GSI). T1 - An application-centred framework for distributed engineering applications N2 - The conceptual structure of an application that can support the structural analysis task in a distributed collaboratory is described in (van Rooyen and Olivier 2004). The application described there has a standalone component for executing the finite element method on a local workstation in the absence of network access. This application is comparable to current, local workstation based finite element packages. However, it differs fundamentally from standard packages since the application itself, and its objects, are adapted to support distributed execution of the analysis task. Basic aspects of an object-oriented framework for the development of applications which can be used in similar distributed collaboratories are described in this paper. An important feature of this framework is its application-centred design. This means that an application can contain any number of engineering models, where the models are formed by the collection of objects according to semantic views within the application. This is achieved through very flexible classes Application and Model, which are described in detail. Der Umfang und die Verschiedenartigkeit der einzelnen Planungsaufgaben bedingen ein paralleles Arbeiten der beteiligten Fachplaner. Darüber hinaus ist die Bauplanung ein kreativer und iterativer Prozess, der durch häufige Änderungen des Planungsmaterials und Abstimmungen zwischen den Fachplanern gekennzeichnet ist. Mithilfe von speziellen Fachanwendungen erstellen die Planungsbeteiligten verschiedene Datenmodelle, zwischen denen fachliche Abhängigkeiten bestehen. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Konsistenz der einzelnen Fachmodelle eines Bauwerks sicherzustellen, indem Abhängigkeiten auf Basis von Objektversionen definiert werden. Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass die Fachanwendungen nach dem etablierten Paradigma der objektorientierten Programmierung entwickelt wurden. Das sequentielle und parallele Arbeiten mehrerer Fachplaner wird auf Basis eines optimistischen Zugriffsmodells unterstützt, das ohne Schreibsperren auskommt. Weiterhin wird die Historie des Planungsmaterials gespeichert und die Definition von rechtsverbindlichen Freigabeständen ermöglicht. Als Vorbild für die Systemarchitektur diente das Softwarekonfigurationsmanagement, dessen Versionierungsansatz meist auf einem Client-Server-Modell beruht. Die formale Beschreibung des verwendeten Ansatzes wird über die Mengenlehre und Relationenalgebra vorgenommen, so dass er allgemeingültig und technologieunabhängig ist. Auf Grundlage dieses Ansatzes werden Konzepte für den Einsatz versionierter Objektmodelle im Bauwesen erarbeitet und mit einer Pilotimplementierung basierend auf einer Open-Source-Ingenieurplattform an einem praxisnahen Szenario verifiziert. Beim Entwurf der Konzepte wird besonderer Wert auf die Handhabbarkeit der Umsetzung gelegt. Das betrifft im Besonderen die hierarchische Strukturierung des Projektmaterials, die ergonomische Gestaltung der Benutzerschnittstellen und der Erzielung von geringen Anwortzeiten. Diese Aspekte sind eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die Effizienz und Akzeptanz von Software im praktischen Einsatz. N2 - Structures are normally unique which often require a new, complete and complex design. The extensiveness and diverseness of the several planning tasks cause a parallel work of the involved planners. Furthermore, the building planning is a creative and iterative process that is characterised by frequent changes of the planning material and coordinations between the professional designers. The planners create different data models with dependencies between each other. The aim of this thesis is to ensure the consistency of the particular expert models by defining dependencies on the basis of object versions. A prerequisite is the development of all specialised applications with the established object-oriented programming paradigm. The sequential and parallel work of many planners is supported by an optimistic access model that does not require write locks. The history of the planning material will be stored additionally and the definition of release states is provided. The software configuration management served as a model for the system architecture whose versioning approach often relies on the client-server concept. The formal description of the used approach is done by the usage of the set theory and relational algebra to ensure its generality and independency from technologies. On the basis of this approach concepts for the application of versioned object models in civil engineering are formulated and verified at a practical scenario with a pilot implementation based on an open source engineering platform. A great importance was attached on the usability of the implementation. This affects especially the structuring of the project material, the ergonomic design of the user interface as well as the achievement of short response times. These aspects are a precondition for the efficiency and acceptance of the software by the practical users. Existing expert applications can be easily integrated in the distributed environment without programming them from scratch. Collaboration amongst team members seperated in time and location is of particular importance. Two broad themes can be recognized in research pertaining to distributed collaboration. One theme focusses on the technical and technological aspects of distributed work, while the other emphasises human aspects thereof. The case of finite element structural analysis in a distributed collaboratory is examined in this paper. An approach is taken which has its roots in human aspects of the structural analysis task. Based on experience of how structural engineers currently approach and execute this task while utilising standard software designed for use on local workstations only, criteria are stated for a software architechture that could support collaborative structural analysis. N2 - The subject of this thesis is the conception and the exemplary realisation of a link-based building modelling approach for the creation of an integrating work and planning environment for the life cycle of buildings. The basis of the integration forms a declarative aligned building model compound consisting of abstract, domain-specific partial models. Due to the in fact existing dynamics in the building life cycle, both the building model compound and the individual partial models are dynamically modifiable. The communication within the suggested total building model architecture is based on specific links provided by users between the partial models. This link-based communication is co-ordinated in the sense of a hybrid model architecture by a central, the links administering component. For the administration and processing of the links, a multiagent-system is suggested. This paper reports on progress of a project, which aims to achieve better integrated building and systems control modeling in building performance simulation by run-time coupling of distributed computer programs. These requirements motivate the use of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), which offers sufficient advantage than communication within simple abstraction. However, set up highly available applications with CORBA is hard. Neither control modeling software nor building performance environments have simple interface with CORBA objects. Therefore, this paper describes an architectural solution to distributed control and building performance software tools with CORBA objects. Then, it explains how much the developement of CORBA based distributed building control simulation applications is difficult. The paper finishes by giving some recommendations.
