N2 - A lot of concrete deterioration due to ASR during the last years show, that it was not possible to estimate truly the al-kali-reactivity of aggregate. Also a true forecast, if a special concrete mixture or a building is insensible to ASR is not possible. The reason is, that there are damages especially with slow-late aggregates (greywacke, quartzite, rhyolite, stressed quartz…), although they were estimated as innocuous using the valid test methods. For getting more and true information about the ASR sensitivity of slow-late aggregates, interrelations between micro-structural properties and solubility were investigated. In special cases where is a good correlation between microstructure and solubility. But there are a lot of other influences. So only for a part of the investigated aggregates it is possible to get a good correla-tion. Among the principles of numerical simulation the flow field and its interdependence of roughness elements as well as flow depth are treated. Investigations are made in a laboratory flume. It is shown, that the usually used approach of average bed slope in step-pool sequences is not admissible instead of local energy slope. The application of approaches known from literary are not leading to satisfying results. The investigation of different resistance equations showed in particular that insufficient describing of roughness structures of bed level only by characteristic grain size fails. Regarding description of roughness structures was developed an simple segmentation algorithm which allows to simplify complex roughness structures. They are transformed to segments of similar standard deviation. This algorithm is inserted in an two-dimensional flow model. N2 - The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to find out whether the application of the method of finite elements to the calculation of shear walls in wood-frame constructions will produce results which are correct and, in a generalized form, - can serve to measure constructions - allow to check existing constructions with norm-deviating details of implementation - and provide a substitute for one-to-one experiments on shear walls. The results can be summarized as follows: Under the present conditions the calculation of one-sheet and two-sheet structures using the method of finite elements does not provide a reasonable alternative to the methods of calculation given in the standards, particularly not for the practical purposes of building industry. For one-sheet and two-sheet structures the investigation methods given in DIN 1052 and in Eurocode 5, respectively, are sufficient. They can be supplemented by the calculation methods given in Kessel in a reasonable way. However, the determination of the load distribution on the vertical studs will not be satisfactory. For constructions such as the multi-sheet structures that are examined in this thesis there are at present no suitable methods of calculation available. Furthermore, it was not possible to prove the applicability of the method of finite elements to the checking of existing constructions with norm-deviating details of implementation. For modelling shear walls in wood-frame constructions various details of solutions are presented. It is shown which details of implementation have significant effects on the overall leading capacity of the shear walls. The method of finite elements in the form used in this investigation can serve to prepare experiments on one-to-one models and can provide valuable data indicating the influence of various details of implementation on the overall loading capacity of a shear wall. This will make it possible to change the experimental set-up in a systematic way. In so far, calculations by means of the model of finite elements provide useful supplementary data. N2 - Deep stabilization of soil with lime columns causes thermal effects. This is mainly due to the reaction of the unslaked lime with the water in the soil. In this thesis the influence of the thermal effects on the movement of soil water was investigated. In a first step the thermal properties of the stabilized soil in the column and the surrounding soil were analysed. In order to calculate the alteration process of the temperature fields the heat generation coupled to the chemical reaction and the thermal boundary conditions like the distribution of temperature in natural soils were defined. On this base the transient change of the temperature field around the lime columns was computed using the finite element method. The numerical analysis was done with the finite element code ANSYS® 6.1. Due to the high saturation of the stabilized and the surrounding soils only heat transfer by thermal conduction was regarded in the first calculation step. For the present the coupled transport of heat and moisture was neglected as well as the influence of moisture movement on the thermal properties. The model was verified by simulating a large-scale field experiment of the Swedish Geotechnical Institute from which temperature measurements were stated. Very good correlations were achieved between experimental and numerical results. In the next step the influences of the soil parameters, the geometry of the lime columns as well as their arrangement, and the lime concentration on the numerical results were investigated. The computed transient temperature fields and the derived thermal gradients formed the basis for the analysis of temperature-dependent moisture movement in the lime columns and in the surrounding soil. Water and water vapour move due to potential gradients from high to low potential. Therefore, the change of the soil water potential caused by thermal effects was regarded. Also, non-thermal effects such as the change of saturation due to soil compaction and the alteration of the osmotic potential due to dissolution processes were taken into consideration. The calculation results indicated a flow of liquid water and water vapour from the centre of the lime columns towards the surrounding soil. The results also showed that the amount of moisture moved by thermal effects is low and does not contribute to the hardening of the lime columns. In a closing calculation step the change of saturation due to thermal and non-thermal effects was taken into account by adapting the thermal soil parameters to the time-dependent distribution of the soil water. It was shown that the altered saturation has negligible effect on the calculated temperature fields. Therefore, the assumptions made in the first calculation step, concerning the mechanism of heat transfer, were proven true. Based on these results, the often-cited influence of the heat released when unslaked lime reacts with the water in soil has to be called into question, at least in the case of the deep stabilization of soils with lime columns. That would require, for example, the transport of moisture to the soil surface, which according to the results of the calculations is not given. Further investigations into the hardening of lime columns and the prediction of this process should concentrate on mechanical and mineralogical effects such as soil compaction and the pozzolanic reactions. Temperature measurements may serve as a good tool for quality assurance, because the development of heat depends strongly on the lime concentration, while the influence of the soil parameters of the stabilized clayey soils on the change of temperature is very small. N2 - Timber-composite elements for buildings combining the favourable load-carrying and surface characteristics of mineral-bound facing and structural timber. The connection between timber and covering layer is of fundamental importance for the stiffness properties and overall performance. Since these systems have been usually realized as timber-concrete composite beams and vertical laminated slabs or revitalization of wooden joists ceilings, metal and groove connectors were usually investigated and used for shear force transfer. Thereby, the separating layer prevented a direct and overall bound. For investigation of the natural adhesion between timber and the covering layer as well as the shear force transfer, different modifications of the timber floor surface (e.g. profiled lamellas) and mineral-bound layer were tested, in fact roughly saws and additionally profiled lamellae of nail-laminated timber elements in combination with accepted mineral-bound layers, for instance concrete, concrete of geopolymer, cement and anhydrite screed. The accomplished tests were completely done without additionally metal connectors and separating layer. Only the natural adhesive bond between timber and applied mineral-bound facing should be sufficient to transfer the shear and tension forces between the layers. It looks into the characteristic of the material, structural composing and collapse detecting to find out the main factors in the wood structure collapse in fire. The aim of the research is to provide an automatic simulation platform for the complicated circulation. A physically based model for slim member for beams and columns and a frame of multi-physical simulation are provided to implement the system. The physically based model contains material model, structural mechanics model, material mechanics model, as well as geometry model for the compositive simulation. The multi-physical simulation is built on the model and has the capacity to carry out a simulation combining structural, fire (thermal, CFD) and material degradation simulation. The structural and fire simulation rely on two sophisticated software respectively, ANSYS (an FEA software) and FDS (with a core of CFD). Researchers of the paper develop system by themselves to combine the two existing ones. The system has the capability to calculate the wood char to find out the loss of cross-section and to detect the collapse caused in different ways. So far available knowledge about resource consumption during an entire life cycle of a building is still quite rare, because various criteria affect each other and/or overlay mutually. In this contribution a model based software concept is presented using an integrated approach for life cycle simulation and assessment of buildings. The essential point of the development consists of connecting an IFC compliant product model of a building via the Internet with data bases for the resource and energy requirement of building materials. Furthermore, numerical simulations allow calculating and minimizing the energy consumption, the resource requirement, the waste streams and also the noxious emissions. In the context of this paper we present the first release of software programs for architects and engineers, which help them to evaluate their design decisions objectively in early planning steps. Additionally the usage of the software is demonstrated by a test case study for a real world building. By applying this software in practice a substantial contribution for saving energy and natural resources can be provided in the sense of sustainable and ecological building design. These designer-focused product models, however, do not represent many of the design conditions that are important for construction, such as component similarity, uniformity, and penetrations. Current design and construction tools offer limited support for detecting these construction-specific design conditions. This paper describes the ontology we developed using the manufacturing concept of features to represent the design conditions that are important for construction. The feature ontology provides the blueprint for the additions and changes needed to transform a standard product model into a constructionspecific product model. The ontology formalizes three classes of features, defines the attributes and functions of each feature type, and represents the relationships between features explicitly. The descriptive semantics of the ontology allows practitioners to represent their varied preferences for naming features, specifying features that result from component intersections and the similarity of components, and grouping features that affect a specific construction domain. A software prototype that implements the ontology enables practitioners to transform designer-focused product models into feature-based product models that represent the construction perspective. N2 - This dissertation presents the development, verification, implementation and efficiency of numerical models for masonry using continuum mechanics and discontinuum mechanics. For macro modelling three-dimensional elasto-plastic continuum models for regular and irregular, single- and multi-leaf masonry types is developed. The constitutive model is based on the multisurface plasticity theory and includes anisotropic elastic and inelastic behaviour, depending on the orientation of the masonry joints. The yield domain, its hardening law and softening law are defined according to experimental results. On this basis, it is possible to simulate masonry-specific failure and damage mechanisms. For consistent numeric implementation, modern elasto-plastic algorithms were used, including the Return Mapping procedure for local iteration at the integration point level, as well as consistent tangent operators and the Newton-Raphson method. The models were implemented into the implicit Finite-Element code ANSYS. For the detailed micro modelling strategy, a new computational model consist of material models for mortar, stone and bond is developed. For the simplified micro modelling strategy, the explicit distinct element method is used to describe the masonry assembly as a discontinuum. The verification analyses show good concordance between experimental and numerical results for different masonry types. The efficiency of the computation models is finally demonstrated, using sample calculations of large masonry structures. N2 - The “origin” of the idea of Europe—if there is one—may be found in Hesiod’s mythological writings. Europe, daughter of Agenor, was—literally—“translated” from Phoenicia to Crete by Zeus who was disguised as a majestic bull. Thus seen, deception and robbery form the foundation of the birth of a continent, at least mythologically. This idea of Europe from antiquity soon developed into a world view in which Europe formed the centre of the terra cognita. In order for the terra incognita to be positioned in relation to this, a fixed point was required. This was finally found in the cartographic element of the zero-meridian. As an ideological line, the longitude-zero provided a unifying system into which the whole world was to be “translated.” Such a euro-centristic zero-point is not only found in cartography, it also has an equivalent (or translation) in perspectival painting, namely in the zero-point or vanishing point. The cultural significance of a zero-point in relation to the idea of Europe is particularly striking in Tiepolo’s painting of the continents in the Treppenhaus in Würzburg. In this architectonic painting, Europe is the subject matter of the frontispiece painted on the stair-well. In order to view this work without distorting the representation, it must be seen from a privileged point on the first half-landing. Here again: deception and illusion. The aim of this paper is to destabilize precisely these fixed positions which establish a Europe that appears unproblematically identical with itself. To do so, I will risk gazing at Tiepolo’s Europe from marginal points of view; that is, from Africa or Asia. And—for the longitude-zero—I will question the cut of the world into two opposite hemispheres, east and west. Europe, then, appears to be always in a state of translation, never fixed in an origin, never being ‘home’ as a final destination. Likewise the Europe in mythology, Europe as a continent, is split by difference while simultaneously driven by desire for a foreign country (Crete). Similarly, the zero-meridian, is a hybrid in between west and east, a translation in between home and abroad. Europe is then always permeated with otherness. The application of the proposed methodology is illustrated by its application to an actual tunneling project—The Hanging Lake Tunnel Project in Colorado, USA. To encompass the typical risks in underground construction, tunneling decisions are structured as a risk-sensitive Markov decision process that reflects the decision process faced by a contractor in each tunneling round. This decision process consists of five basic components: (1) decision stages (locations), (2) system states (ground classes and tunneling methods), (3) alternatives (tunneling methods), (4) ground class transition probabilities, and (5) tunneling cost structure. The paper also presents concepts related to risk preference that are necessary to model the contractor’s risk attitude, including the lottery concept, utility theory, and the delta property. The optimality equation is formulated, the model components are defined, and the model is solved by stochastic dynamic programming. The main results are the optimal construction plans and risk-adjusted project costs, both of which reflect the dynamics of subsurface construction, the uncertainty about geologic variability as a function of available information, and the contractor’s risk preference. The authors have already proposed intelligent fuzzy optimal active control (IFOAC) systems. IFOAC systems imitate intelligent activities of human brains such as prediction, adaptation, decision-kaking and so on. In IFOAC systems, objective and subjective judgements on the active control can be taken into account. However, IFOAC systems are considered to be suitable for far-field erathquake and control effect becomes small in case of near-field earthqaukes which include a few velosity pules with large amplitudes. To improve control effect in case of near-souece earthquakes, the authors have also proposed hybrid control (HC) systems, in which IFOAC systems and fuzzy control system are combined. In HC systems, the fuzzy control systems are introduced as a reflective fuzzy active control (RFAC) system and imitates spinal reflection of human. In HC systems, active control forces are activated to buildings in accordance with switching rules on active control forces. In this paper, optimizations on fuzzy control rules in RFAC system and switching rules of active control forces in HC system are performed by Parameter-Free Genetic Algorithms (PfGAs). Here, the optimization is performed by using different earthquake inputs. The results of digital simulations show that the HC system can reduce maximal response displacements under restrictions on strokes of the actuator effectively in case of a near-source earthquake and the effectiveness of the proposed HC system is discussed and clarified. The experiments were conducted using Inventor 2003, a networkbased evolutionary design support tool developed at George Mason University. First, a general introduction to evolutionary computation is provided with an emphasis on recent developments in parallel evolutionary architectures. Next, a discussion of conceptual design of steel structural systems in tall buildings is presented. Further, Inventor 2003 is briefly introduced as well as its design representation and evolutionary computation characteristics. Next, the results obtained from systematic design experiments conducted with Inventor 2003 are discussed. The objective of these experiments was to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate evolution of steel structural systems in tall buildings during a distributed evolutionary design process as well as to compare efficiency and effectiveness of various parallel evolutionary architectures with the traditional evolutionary design approaches. Two connectivity topologies (ring topology and fully-connected topology) have been investigated for four populations of structural designs evolving in parallel and using various migration strategies. Also, results of the initial sensitivity studies are reported in which two ways of initializing distributed evolutionary design processes were investigated, using either arbitrarily selected designs as initial parents or randomly generated ones. Finally, initial research conclusions are presented. T1 - Development of a Fuzzy System for Change Prediction in Construction Projects N2 - Change management has been the focus of different IT systems. These IT systems were developed to represent design information, record design rationale, facilitate design coordination and changes. They are largely based on managing reactive changes, particularly design changes, in which changes are recorded and then propagated to the relevant project members. However, proactive changes are hardly dealt with in IT systems. Proactive changes require estimating the likelihood of occurrence of a change event as well as estimating the degree of change impacts on project parameters. Changes in construction projects often result from the uncertainty associated with the imprecise and vague knowledge of much project information at the early stages of projects. This is a major outcome of the case studies carried out as part of this research. Therefore, the proposed model considers that incomplete knowledge and certain project characteristics are always behind change causes. For proactive changes, predicting a change event is the main task for modelling. The prediction model should strive to integrate these main elements: 1) project characteristics that lead to change 2) causes of change, 3) the likelihood of change occurrence, and 4) the change consequences. It should also define the dependency relationships between these elements. However, limited data (documented) are only available from previous projects for change cases and many of the above elements can only be expressed in linguistic terms. This means that the model will simulate the uncertainty and subjectivity associated with these sets of elements. Therefore, a fuzzy model is proposed in this research to capture these elements. The model analyses the impact of each set of elements on the other by assigning fuzzy values for these elements that express the uncertainty and subjectivity of their impact. The main aim is to predict change events and evaluate change effects on project parameters. The fuzzy model described above was developed in an IT system for operational purposes and was designed as a Java package of components with their supporting classes, beans, and files. This paper describes the development and the architecture of the proposed IT system to achieve these requirements. The system is intended to help project teams in dealing with change causes and then the change consequences in construction projects. The system can help ease off the burden of routine small-scale maintenance work, making it more cost-effective and efficient in the overall management of school building maintenance. VAS posts jobs on the Web in a multi-media format and classified all applications into four categories: the on-call maintenance contract, the term maintenance contract, the guaranty maintenance contract, and the regular maintenance contract. It then estimates their urgency level and passes the information to maintenance engineers who will decide whether on-site inspection is needed. Based on the engineers’ feedback, VAS automatically implements the scheduling for inspection as well as sends out real-time or batch notifications to contractors. The paper proposes a conceptual framework for emergency management in the built environment, using Semantic Grid as an integrating platform for different technologies. The framework supports a distributed network of specialists in built environment, including structural engineers, building technologists, decision analysts etc. It brings together the necessary technology threads, including the Semantic Web (to provide a framework for shared definitions of terms, resources and relationships), Web Services (to provide dynamic discovery and integration) and Grid Computing (for enhanced computational power, high speed access, collaboration and security control) to support rapid formation of virtual teams for disaster management. N2 - Social change is reflected in more and more complex individual travel-activity behaviour, which can be represented as travel-activity patterns. The analytical classification of travel activty-pattern into groups and the description of the travel activty-pattern types is an important issue to travel-activty behaviour analysis for a long time. A realistic measure between individual travel-activity patterns is the basis for the analysis and the description of differences in travel-activity behaviour. In the centre of the multi-method-approach stands the practical application of the so-called Optimal Matching Technique. This approach is adapted, tested and applied. This method involves the element composition - identical activities and trips in both travel-activity patterns, which are arranged in different positions - and the element order - the identical order of activities and trips in both travel-activity patterns. The multi-method approach contains the following basic components: Classification of the travel-activity pattern: Statistical analysis starts with the most important point: the application of the Optimal Matching Technique. This sequence alignment method quantifies dissimilarities between travel-activity patterns in the form of distances. While conventional distance measures for sequences compare only elements of the same position, the Optimal Matching Technique extends the ability to measure the degree of differences between sequences. The result of the application of the Optimal Matching Technique is a symmetrical distance matrix, in which dissimilarity scores for the travel-activity patterns pairs are specified. As a second step, the purpose of the application of the cluster analysis is to classify the travel-activity pattern based on the calculated distance matrix of the Optimal Matching Technique Description of the travel-activity pattern types: The identification of variables, which explain the affinity to a travel-activity pattern type as independent variables, forms the main function of the last methodological step. For this problem, the use of a multinomial logit model is appropriate, because this method allows a determination of influences of different explanatory variables on a dependent, categorial variable. The explanatory model results in statements of probability for a person with personal, household and spatial characteristics to realize travel-activity pattern types. The multi-method approach is characterised by a direct strategy, which guarantees a high level of objectivity. Further on a probabilistic causal relation between person type and travel-activity pattern type is appropriate on the background of social change. The statistical methods for cluster analysis and the logit model are “state of the practice”. Only the new method Optimal Matching Technique will be described closer. For the application of the Optimal Matching Technique a priori assumptions must be made for the ”cost” of the transformation operation, which is a key issue of the method. The criteria of priority is introduced as a measure for states and changes in states for activities and trips. Testing the sensitivity of the results of the Optimal Matching Technique depends on the definition of “cost”. It can be concluded that there is a strong influence on travel-activity pattern distances. The multi-method approach is applied in an exemplary manner both to classify weekly travel-activity pattern and to describe the travel-activity pattern types. The empirical data-base is the German Mobility Panel (MOP). The classification results in a seven cluster solution of weekly travel-activity pattern types, which can be interpreted in a plausible way. It can be shown, that the approach of comparing activity-travel pattern based on the Optimal Matching Technique captures the element composition. It remains uncertain if and how far this succeeds to the element order. The seven travel-activity pattern types can be described in terms of sociodemographic characteristics ("age", “gender” and "status of employment"), “driving licence” and “discount public transport”. Its essence is in recognising user requirements and use cases in the context of the real construction process, identifying the actors and roles for each individual activity and associating these activities with information, communication and standardisation requirements on the basis of a formalised specification, named the Process Matrix. In the paper we outline the history of process matrix development, introduce the basic structure of the matrix and show how it can be further extended and refined.
