T1 - Distraction and Pamper. The Physiological, Symbolical and Integrated Body in Architecture. N2 - As the main assumption of this thesis says, the human body is an important reference of contemporary architecture. Usually the relation of the human body and architecture is discussed by focussing on a body restricted on its physiological properties interacting with modern architecture or new media technology. The examination of theoretical concepts of the human body accompanied by the case study of the contemporary architecture of Las Vegas shows, that the concept of the body has undergone a change of meaning. Following the thesis, many contemporary planners use the concept of the integrated body. The phenomenological approach which consists in finding explanations by focussing on the human body and its perception is contested by different author because of the impossibility to define the boundaries between the human body and its environment. Consequently the body would not serve as a reference. This objection is invalidate if one considers the concept of animate form of the philosopher Sheets-Johnstone. This concept goes beyond the different notions of the body which Merleau-Ponty proposes as Eigenleib or Fleisch. Especially the focus on the tactile-kinaesthetic body opens up new perspectives. Thence, as the human body can be defined and qualified this reference makes sense. The way in which planners draw attention to the human body is explained by considering the case study of recently built resort architecture in Las Vegas. Architecture forms a part of a megamedium generated by different disciplines of environmental design. Both the quantity and the quality of the stimulus used increase. Planners mainly use stimulus which the user perceives unconsciously. Besides the sensual perception, symbolic qualities are taken into account. The wishes and ideas of a specific target group are determined and converted to architectural elements. These semiotic elements are designed in a way the user can experience the meaning sensuously. This concept of the body is denominated the integrated body. As the comparison with the notion of the body in Scott Brown, Venturi and Izenours book Learning from Las Vegas and in texts and buildings of the author’s contemporaries as Lynch, Norberg-Schulz and Kahn shows, the concept of the body has changed. By concentrating on the bodily perception architects and theoreticians become aware of the influence of the symbolic. The body is imbedded in a system of conventions and traditions affecting its actions. Unlike this, architects of the modern movement mainly refer to the physiological properties of the body, to its size and mechanical properties, as examples of texts, buildings and man models of Meyer, Neutra, Le Corbusier and Neufert show. It is noticeable that journalists often employ terms to describe Las Vegas’ architecture which are usually used in the phenomenological discourse as experience and atmosphere. It can be shown that the meaning of the philosophical notion are reflected in the architecture. As to architecture, experience does not only stands for “Erlebnisarchitektur” (which means architecture of the event) but relates to the long term influence the target group’s user has succeeded by interacting with the physical and symbolic environment. The architectural case study also shows, that planners employ techniques to generate atmospheres. Following the philosopher Böhme atmospheres are situated between the subject and the object and by appealing the senses. Thus the body is very close to architecture. The fact that different architectural movements use techniques to generate atmospheres shows, that the idea of the integrated body can be found in different contexts. The user’s reactions make clear that atmospheric spaces effect people. That is why those spaces are used for political economical aims. The use of the spatial effects does not depend solely on design questions but is directly linked to the political and economical situation. N2 - Within the context of the >new< media, architectonic space must be understood as a medium of communication. This is because it was always a medium, coexisting with other media within a complex media structure. Ensconced as it is within a process of activity and communication, architectonic space is the one medium that facilitates such a close proximity of individuals whose senses and consciousness thus experience a simultaneity of intensity. The architectonic space as an immersive communication medium attained a new dimension in the age of the >new< media, interactive communication availing itself of an increased number of alternative realities. Following the work of N. Luhmann, architecture may be viewed from the perspective of form/medium-difference as a structured space of possibilities within a theory of systems. The space is the medium for forms of architectonic space in the sense that only then does the architecture itself become apparent. The contrary is the case where forms of architectonic space act as media for the apperception of numerous spatial realities. A façade made of stone or glass is built form and as a medium can impart information. The more media abandon their advertence, the better they fulfil their appropriateness and recede like transparent windows behind the surface of animal consciousness. Thus, architectonic space as a >non-perceptible< medium becomes an >agent of power<, a stage for the evolvement of agency, atmosphere and movement/action. Its physical reality was always borderless, not bounded by virtual actualities or realities which are themselves perceivable and communicable as artificial worlds via the techniques and technologies of simulation. Right up to the present day, this is exemplified by artifices such as the Gothic cathedral, the panorama and panoramic spaces, the theatre, the cinema, or the continuous spaces of modernism. Virtual spaces defined by Gothic stained glass or ceiling and wall murals of the Baroque – within the medium of the architectonic space lest we forget – are all familiar to us. Immersion, in the sense of submerging in these virtual sanctums of reality, releases the apperception of each corporeal presence. In comparison to other virtual realities such as text, image or digital media, the potential of the virtual space in architecture arises out of its bondage to the physical and spatial structure of stimuli on which the forcefulness and complexity of its effectiveness depends. Citing examples of contemporary architecture points up various interdependencies between and common evolutions among the >new< media. As new techniques and technologies of digital and electronic media are introduced, the physical spatial border of the >sensitive wall< becomes in terms of interaction increasingly pliable and ductile for the user. The H2O Pavilion (Oosterhuis and NOX, 1997) is just one example. The highly polysensoric immersion space stands for the unity of digital and architectonic simulation. The metaphoric world of caverns and wells of the hot springs at Vals (P. Zumthor, 1996) is the spatial reflexion on the metaphoric structure of virtual spaces as exemplified by the >new< media. The simulated reality in the media water, stone, and architectonic space, enables in an inventive way the polysensoric and immersive access to the virtual worlds of the >authentic< physical environment. That which is >visible< in the medium of architectural space is not understandable without the >invisible<; in other words, the state of sensory perceptibility depends on the existence of the non-perceptible. The recognition of this relation between form and medium allows a new term to be formulated: the >medial space of architecture<. This in turn becomes the basis for a new media theory of architecture itself, a premise defined as a perspective on the debordering of physical space through the virtual one and existing to provide subjective apperception, activity and communication. For design firms to stay in business in this very competitive market, they need to manage their resources in a way that improves productivity and cost effectiveness. This task, however, is not simple and requires thorough analysis of process-level operations, resource use, and productivity. Typically, these operational aspects are the responsibility of the design office manager who assigns available resources to the different design projects to save time and lower design expenses. It is noted that limited studies have been carried out in the literature to model overall organizational operations and behavioral aspects, particularly in firms specialized in the design of building projects. In an effort to simplify the modeling process, a simplified modeling and simulation tool is used in this research. A simulation model representing an actual design office was developed assuming that the office performs designs for small, medium, and large size building projects. The developed model was used to simulate several alternatives and examine various resource assignment strategies. The simulation was conducted over ten years and the resulting productivity and income was measured. But most of the time it is difficult for the software systems to unambiguously understand their overall intentions. The existence of information tunnels (Tannenbaum 2002) aggravates this phenomenon. This study includes a detailed case study of the material management process in the construction industry. Based on this case study, the structure of a formal user model for information retrieval in construction management is proposed. This prototype user model will be incorporated into the system design for construction information management and retrieval. This information retrieval system is a user-centered product based on the development of a user configurable visitor mechanism for managing and retrieving project information without worrying too much about the underlying data structure of the database system. N2 - In this thesis various available methods for the site identification with surface waves were analyzed. Some new methods are proposed for the site identification using surface wave characteristics. The objectives of the thesis are as follows: a) To develop an appropriate theoretical model that can work in conjunction with the results obtained from the site inverstigations to precisely identify the actual in situ stiffness profiles. b) To develop a new inversion procedure that enables to inverse all the appearing modes in a wave field. An appropriate model should be able to define the vertical heterogeniety of the subsoil. In this study, the existing solution for the homogeneous half space was extended to the stratified medium. An analytical formulation in the frequency domain was used for this purpose by considering arbitrary horizontal, elastic isotropic layers. The Green’s functions were defined in the matrix formulation in the form of reflection- and transmission coefficients. In this way the analytical considerations could be carried out in a strong mathematical procedure. The solution for the forced excited layered half space was obtained following the contour integration. The solution could be separated in to the body wave and the surface wave fields. The advantage of such an analytical approach lies in the definite allocation of the preserved solutions for wave types and the straight dispersion characteristic of the calculated models. The difference between the analytical and the numerical solutions, such as using FEM, is that the interpretation of the calculated wave field is not required in the former, whereas it is necessary in the latter case. With the help of an analytic wave field calculation the behavior of the propagate surface wave fields in the stratified media could be better simulated and examined. For the investigation of the stiffness profiles primarily the modal superposition by surface waves and the wave number-integration were used. Special surface wave field investigation methods were necessary for the determination of the available dispersion characterisic. For the realization of the dispersion analysis in geoengineering investigations the phase difference method (SASW) is a widely used tool. Since the information on the higher modes are limited, an improved method is proposed to separate the different modes from the experimental data. The proposed method used the spatially spread wave field for the dispersion information. The soil structure can be determined by using various inverse methods. For the joint inversion of all the available modes in the measurements, a suitable inversion procedure was derived. For the stabilization of the inversion procedure, a least square method was chosen. The disadvantage of this efficient method is a local minimum search of the objective function. To achieve a stable and focused inversion procedure the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used. The different dispersion branches multiplied by weighting factors corresponds to the excitation behavior in the dispersion spectra. One particularly advantage in the work is the concurrent treatment of theoretical and experimental parameter studies. According this treatment, the results and cognitions of both sides were complementary. An interpretation of field data could be carried out reliably. In addition, the compiled experimental and theoretical procedures could be checked mutually. N2 - The pioneer camp Artek on the Crimean peninsula at the Black Sea was built in the 1960’s and was the biggest of its kind in the former Soviet Union. As a representative and representing institution Artek is a famous example for the architecture of the Khrushchev-era, the so called “Thaw”. From the dialectical principle of presentation and representation four aspects of the camp are analysed: architecture, urban planning, education and “Gesamtkunstwerk”. Within these principle which is deduced from the “Widerspiegelungstheorie” every aspect shows congruence to its ideological target and with that the coherent design of the camp. Distinguishing to the modern architecture of the western industrial nations in Artek a specific “socialist modernism” for the Soviet Union and the allied countries was defined. This was strictly linked with an urban planning based on Mikrorayons and the design of city-centers and sub-centers. Artek as an ideal design of architecture and urban planning is a monument for the former Soviet Union. This has raised concerns from the public for new strategies in the planning and design of isolation facilities. Considering that SARS or other infectious diseases could seriously damage our society’s development, isolation facilities that could be rapidly and economically constructed with appropriate environmental controls are essential. For this reason, the design team of the Department of Architecture collaborated with a special task force from the Faculty of Medicine, who are the frontline medical officers treating the SARS patients, to design Rapidly Assembled Isolation Patient Wards. N2 - The work describes a concept for the step-by-step computer-aided capture and representation of geometric building data in the context of planning-oriented building surveying. To begin with the survey is considered as the creation of a use-specific model. In following steps the focus is transferred to its geometric representation. Various surveying methods including tacheometry and photogrammetry as well as manual measurements are assessed and typical geometric abstractions for buildings identified. A requirements catalogue is then devised for a computer-aided building surveying system and compared with existing commercial solutions from non-geodetic fields. The man part of the paper describes the concept. Starting by examining the sketch-like creation of a non-geometric representation of the building in the initial building surveying phases, the paper goes on to describe how this can be increasingly adapted to fit the geometry of the actual situation and topological detail as the building surveying process continues. Individual buildings elements and their geometric data can be extracted. Simple geometric abstractions such as parallel and orthogonal orientation can be employed where necessary to simplify the adaptation of the geometric representation during the surveying process. Computational adjustment processes are employed to equate geometric data from different abstractions and surveying methods. The necessary conditional equations and other relevant aspects are detailed. A concept is described in which a user-definable building model can be related to a geometric representation, and where geometric parameters of the user’s model can be extracted based upon the geometric representation. Selected aspects of the concept have been implemented and tested as prototypes. The focus here is on the relationship between surveying technique and geometric abstraction. The geometric approach in this paper is limited to planar surfaces. The authors have already proposed intelligent fuzzy optimal active control (IFOAC) systems. IFOAC systems imitate intelligent activities of human brains such as prediction, adaptation, decision-kaking and so on. In IFOAC systems, objective and subjective judgements on the active control can be taken into account. However, IFOAC systems are considered to be suitable for far-field erathquake and control effect becomes small in case of near-field earthqaukes which include a few velosity pules with large amplitudes. To improve control effect in case of near-souece earthquakes, the authors have also proposed hybrid control (HC) systems, in which IFOAC systems and fuzzy control system are combined. In HC systems, the fuzzy control systems are introduced as a reflective fuzzy active control (RFAC) system and imitates spinal reflection of human. In HC systems, active control forces are activated to buildings in accordance with switching rules on active control forces. In this paper, optimizations on fuzzy control rules in RFAC system and switching rules of active control forces in HC system are performed by Parameter-Free Genetic Algorithms (PfGAs). Modern indentation machines have the capability to continuously monitor load and displacement to high precision and accuracy. In recent years, research interests have focussed on methods to extract material properties from indentation load-displacement curves. Analytical methods to interpret the indentation load-displacement curves are difficult to formulate due to material and geometric nonlinearities as well as complex contact interactions. In the present study, an artificial neural network model was constructed for interpretation of indentation load-displacement curves. Large strain-large deformation finite element analyses were first carried out to simulate indentation experiments. The data from finite element analyses were then used to train the artificial neural network model. The artificial neural network model was able to accurately determine the material properties when presented with load-displacement curves which were not used in the training process. The proposed artificial neural network model is robust and directly relates the characteristics of the indentation loaddisplacement curve to the elasto-plastic material properties. Current design and construction tools offer limited support for detecting these construction-specific design conditions. This paper describes the ontology we developed using the manufacturing concept of features to represent the design conditions that are important for construction. The feature ontology provides the blueprint for the additions and changes needed to transform a standard product model into a constructionspecific product model. The ontology formalizes three classes of features, defines the attributes and functions of each feature type, and represents the relationships between features explicitly. The descriptive semantics of the ontology allows practitioners to represent their varied preferences for naming features, specifying features that result from component intersections and the similarity of components, and grouping features that affect a specific construction domain. A software prototype that implements the ontology enables practitioners to transform designer-focused product models into feature-based product models that represent the construction perspective. Collaborative Design Processes (CDP) is a capstone design course where students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Florida learn methods of collaborative design enhanced by the use of information technology. Students work in multidisciplinary teams to collaborate from remote locations via the Internet on the design of a facility. An innovation of this course compared to previous efforts is that students also develop process designs for the integration of technology into the work of multidisciplinary design teams. The course thus combines both active and reflective learning about collaborative design and methods. The course is designed to provide students the experience, tools, and methods needed to improve design processes and better integrate the use of technology into AEC industry work practices. This paper describes the goals, outcomes and significance of this new, interdisciplinary course for distributed AEC education. Differences from existing efforts and lessons learned to promote collaborative practices are discussed. This is mainly due to the reaction of the unslaked lime with the water in the soil. In this thesis the influence of the thermal effects on the movement of soil water was investigated. In a first step the thermal properties of the stabilized soil in the column and the surrounding soil were analysed. In order to calculate the alteration process of the temperature fields the heat generation coupled to the chemical reaction and the thermal boundary conditions like the distribution of temperature in natural soils were defined. On this base the transient change of the temperature field around the lime columns was computed using the finite element method. The numerical analysis was done with the finite element code ANSYS® 6.1. Due to the high saturation of the stabilized and the surrounding soils only heat transfer by thermal conduction was regarded in the first calculation step. For the present the coupled transport of heat and moisture was neglected as well as the influence of moisture movement on the thermal properties. The model was verified by simulating a large-scale field experiment of the Swedish Geotechnical Institute from which temperature measurements were stated. Very good correlations were achieved between experimental and numerical results. In the next step the influences of the soil parameters, the geometry of the lime columns as well as their arrangement, and the lime concentration on the numerical results were investigated. The computed transient temperature fields and the derived thermal gradients formed the basis for the analysis of temperature-dependent moisture movement in the lime columns and in the surrounding soil. Water and water vapour move due to potential gradients from high to low potential. Therefore, the change of the soil water potential caused by thermal effects was regarded. Also, non-thermal effects such as the change of saturation due to soil compaction and the alteration of the osmotic potential due to dissolution processes were taken into consideration. The calculation results indicated a flow of liquid water and water vapour from the centre of the lime columns towards the surrounding soil. The results also showed that the amount of moisture moved by thermal effects is low and does not contribute to the hardening of the lime columns. In a closing calculation step the change of saturation due to thermal and non-thermal effects was taken into account by adapting the thermal soil parameters to the time-dependent distribution of the soil water. It was shown that the altered saturation has negligible effect on the calculated temperature fields. Therefore, the assumptions made in the first calculation step, concerning the mechanism of heat transfer, were proven true. Based on these results, the often-cited influence of the heat released when unslaked lime reacts with the water in soil has to be called into question, at least in the case of the deep stabilization of soils with lime columns. That would require, for example, the transport of moisture to the soil surface, which according to the results of the calculations is not given. Further investigations into the hardening of lime columns and the prediction of this process should concentrate on mechanical and mineralogical effects such as soil compaction and the pozzolanic reactions. Temperature measurements may serve as a good tool for quality assurance, because the development of heat depends strongly on the lime concentration, while the influence of the soil parameters of the stabilized clayey soils on the change of temperature is very small. Appropriate data were given in this thesis. N2 - This dissertation presents the development, verification, implementation and efficiency of numerical models for masonry using continuum mechanics and discontinuum mechanics. For macro modelling three-dimensional elasto-plastic continuum models for regular and irregular, single- and multi-leaf masonry types is developed. The constitutive model is based on the multisurface plasticity theory and includes anisotropic elastic and inelastic behaviour, depending on the orientation of the masonry joints. The yield domain, its hardening law and softening law are defined according to experimental results. On this basis, it is possible to simulate masonry-specific failure and damage mechanisms. For consistent numeric implementation, modern elasto-plastic algorithms were used, including the Return Mapping procedure for local iteration at the integration point level, as well as consistent tangent operators and the Newton-Raphson method. The models were implemented into the implicit Finite-Element code ANSYS. For the detailed micro modelling strategy, a new computational model consist of material models for mortar, stone and bond is developed. For the simplified micro modelling strategy, the explicit distinct element method is used to describe the masonry assembly as a discontinuum. The verification analyses show good concordance between experimental and numerical results for different masonry types. The efficiency of the computation models is finally demonstrated, using sample calculations of large masonry structures. For such tasks, the best measurement system provides maximum separation between candidate models. In this work, the degree of separation between models is measured using Shannon’s Entropy Function. The location and type of measurement devices are chosen such that the entropy of candidate models is greatest. N2 - In addition to the large group of plasticizing admixtures, such kind of admixtures are required which enable a very long time of workability of concrete. The workability of concrete over a period of more than 90 hours can be achieved by long-term retarders. This new type of admixture is based on phosphonic acid. By systematic investigations profound knowledge about the operative mechanisms of long-term retarders could be drawn. The retarding action is due to a formation of sparingly soluble calcium phosphonate which žseal upœ the particle surface. Whether the addition of long-term retarder leads to an immediate formation of calcium phosphonate or to a short termed acceleration of the hydration of reactive clinker phases depends on the supply of solved calcium. Because of the adjusted calcium sulphate content in cement the concentration of calcium is high enough for an immediate formation of sparingly soluble calcium! phosphonate. Often, information that is observed on a construction site needs to be integrated into electronic documents or project control systems. In the future, we expect integrated product and process models to be the medium for storing and handling construction project management information. Even though mobile computing devices today are already capable of storing and handling such integrated product and process data models, the user interaction with such large and complex models is difficult and not adequately addressed in the existing research. In this paper, we introduce a system that supports project management tasks on construction sites effectively and efficiently by making integrated product and process models accessible. In order to effectively and efficiently enter or access information, site superintendents need visual representations of the project data that are flexible with respect to the level of detail, the decomposition structure, and the type of visual representation. Based on this understanding of the information and data collection needs, we developed the navigational model framework and the application Site Data Collection System (SiDaCoS), which implements that framework. The navigational model framework allows site superintendents to create customized representations of information contained in a product and process model that correspond to their data access and data collection needs on site. Within the fundamental investigation human and natural circumstances have to be taken into account. Thus, in this project two examples have been chosen in order to demonstrate the holistic approach for an integration and provision of georeferenced information. The developed internet-site http://www.grundlagenermittlung.de has been designed to support architects and civil engineers in early planning phases of a building project efficiently. This aim can be only reached by transferring of innovative information and communication technologies in the field of cooperation of all partners in a building project. In this article the enhancement of the existing planning processes based on an improved information management is introduced. Since the late 90ies the availability of hardware and software infrastructures for a networkbased cooperation, e.g. email, in small and middle-sized companies increased the problems of an unstructured communication in the planning and construction processes. These problems have not been solved by the usage of the upcoming project communication systems either, which are often used as a simple medium for data transfer. Because of the easy way of distributing documents to all planning partners a huge amount of files and subsequent versions can be stored so that the planners often have to scope with an information overflow. The underlying hierarchical structures based on simple files stored in tree views are not sufficient for an adequate representation of the different specific views of the planners and the management of relationships between the three information domains building structure, costs and time schedules. .. N2 - The energy supply on our earth will become a problem in future. This is conditional by a shortage of the natural source, like coal, gas and oil, as well as an increase in the concentration of gasous CO2 in the atmosphere. Regenerative energy sources must be used more increasingly to saveguard the increasing energy consumption. Upwind power plants represent an interesting possibility for the use of solar energy. The upwind power plant consist of an collector, an chimney and one ore several turbines. The collector heats the air by the interaction with the ground. The glass reflects the infrared radiation of the ground. The Chimney provides a large density difference between the collector exit and the atmosphere. The goal of this work was the mathematical und physical modelling of the thermodynamics in and around an upwind power plant. Steady and unsteady CFD models and steady and unsteady simplified models were developed and compared. Basically new knowledge was reached at the courses of the temperatures in the collector. A very good agreement between the results of the steady hybrid model and the steady CFD model (temperature difference of the collector, pressure at the turbine, power and degree of effectiveness) could be found for four solar energies. Furthermore, the local values of heat-transfer coefficient, soil temperature, temperature of the fluid and the temperature of the glass roof compare very well beetwen the models. The prototyp manzanares and three large power plants were solved with the developed CFD model. Numeric long time simulations (1 year) were carried out for the first time with the developed unsteady Finite-Difference-Model. The model was compared with results of the project Manzanares. The industry is highly fragmented, price sensitive, risk-adverse, and profit margins are small. Each project is unique with a small amount of technological innovation opportunities to capitalise on from one project to the next. Technological innovations that have been taking place are just simulating the old traditional paper workflow. Engineering information in digital form is being conveyed using traditional paper representations, which have to be interpreted by humans before the information can be used in other applications, thereby creating ‘islands of information’. It can be seen that poorly implemented IT strategies are duplicating paperwork, rather than reducing or eliminating it (Crowley et al., 2000). The application described there has a standalone component for executing the finite element method on a local workstation in the absence of network access. This application is comparable to current, local workstation based finite element packages. However, it differs fundamentally from standard packages since the application itself, and its objects, are adapted to support distributed execution of the analysis task. Basic aspects of an object-oriented framework for the development of applications which can be used in similar distributed collaboratories are described in this paper. An important feature of this framework is its application-centred design. This means that an application can contain any number of engineering models, where the models are formed by the collection of objects according to semantic views within the application. This is achieved through very flexible classes Application and Model, which are described in detail. The advantages of the application-centred design approach is demonstrated with reference to the design of steel structures, where the finite element analysis model, member design model and connection design model interact to provide the required functionality. Firm performance is a composite score of several metrics of performance: schedule performance, cost performance, customer satisfaction, safety performance, and profit. No relationship is found between IT utilization and customer satisfaction, safety, or profit, although this may be due to limitations of the study given strong correlations between IT utilization and cost and schedule performnance. So far available knowledge about resource consumption during an entire life cycle of a building is still quite rare, because various criteria affect each other and/or overlay mutually. In this contribution a model based software concept is presented using an integrated approach for life cycle simulation and assessment of buildings. The essential point of the development consists of connecting an IFC compliant product model of a building via the Internet with data bases for the resource and energy requirement of building materials. Furthermore, numerical simulations allow calculating and minimizing the energy consumption, the resource requirement, the waste streams and also the noxious emissions. In the context of this paper we present the first release of software programs for architects and engineers, which help them to evaluate their design decisions objectively in early planning steps. Additionally the usage of the software is demonstrated by a test case study for a real world building. By applying this software in practice a substantial contribution for saving energy and natural resources can be provided in the sense of sustainable and ecological building design. N2 - The “origin” of the idea of Europe—if there is one—may be found in Hesiod’s mythological writings. Europe, daughter of Agenor, was—literally—“translated” from Phoenicia to Crete by Zeus who was disguised as a majestic bull. Thus seen, deception and robbery form the foundation of the birth of a continent, at least mythologically. This idea of Europe from antiquity soon developed into a world view in which Europe formed the centre of the terra cognita. In order for the terra incognita to be positioned in relation to this, a fixed point was required. This was finally found in the cartographic element of the zero-meridian. As an ideological line, the longitude-zero provided a unifying system into which the whole world was to be “translated.” Such a euro-centristic zero-point is not only found in cartography, it also has an equivalent (or translation) in perspectival painting, namely in the zero-point or vanishing point. The cultural significance of a zero-point in relation to the idea of Europe is particularly striking in Tiepolo’s painting of the continents in the Treppenhaus in Würzburg. In this architectonic painting, Europe is the subject matter of the frontispiece painted on the stair-well. In order to view this work without distorting the representation, it must be seen from a privileged point on the first half-landing. Here again: deception and illusion. The aim of this paper is to destabilize precisely these fixed positions which establish a Europe that appears unproblematically identical with itself. To do so, I will risk gazing at Tiepolo’s Europe from marginal points of view; that is, from Africa or Asia. And—for the longitude-zero—I will question the cut of the world into two opposite hemispheres, east and west. Europe, then, appears to be always in a state of translation, never fixed in an origin, never being ‘home’ as a final destination. Likewise the Europe in mythology, Europe as a continent, is split by difference while simultaneously driven by desire for a foreign country (Crete). Similarly, the zero-meridian, is a hybrid in between west and east, a translation in between home and abroad. Europe is then always permeated with otherness. T1 - Development of a Fuzzy System for Change Prediction in Construction Projects N2 - Change management has been the focus of different IT systems. These IT systems were developed to represent design information, record design rationale, facilitate design coordination and changes. They are largely based on managing reactive changes, particularly design changes, in which changes are recorded and then propagated to the relevant project members. However, proactive changes are hardly dealt with in IT systems. Proactive changes require estimating the likelihood of occurrence of a change event as well as estimating the degree of change impacts on project parameters. Changes in construction projects often result from the uncertainty associated with the imprecise and vague knowledge of much project information at the early stages of projects. This is a major outcome of the case studies carried out as part of this research. Therefore, the proposed model considers that incomplete knowledge and certain project characteristics are always behind change causes. For proactive changes, predicting a change event is the main task for modelling. The prediction model should strive to integrate these main elements: 1) project characteristics that lead to change 2) causes of change, 3) the likelihood of change occurrence, and 4) the change consequences. It should also define the dependency relationships between these elements. However, limited data (documented) are only available from previous projects for change cases and many of the above elements can only be expressed in linguistic terms. This means that the model will simulate the uncertainty and subjectivity associated with these sets of elements. Therefore, a fuzzy model is proposed in this research to capture these elements. The model analyses the impact of each set of elements on the other by assigning fuzzy values for these elements that express the uncertainty and subjectivity of their impact. The main aim is to predict change events and evaluate change effects on project parameters. The fuzzy model described above was developed in an IT system for operational purposes and was designed as a Java package of components with their supporting classes, beans, and files. This paper describes the development and the architecture of the proposed IT system to achieve these requirements. The system is intended to help project teams in dealing with change causes and then the change consequences in construction projects. This helps with reasoning and communicates ideas to other members of the team. Sketches are gradually worked up into more formal drawings which are then passed to the other stages of the design process. There are however some problems with basing early ideas on sketching. For example, due to their ad-hoc nature, sketches tend only to be diagrammatic representations and so designers cannot be sure that their ideas are feasible and what is being proposed meets the constraints described in the client brief. This can result in designers wasting time working up ideas which prove to be unsuitable. Also the process of constraint checking is complex and time consuming and so designers tend limit their search of possible options and instead choose satisfying rather than good solutions. This paper describes the INTEGRA project which examines the role of sketching in early conceptual design and how this can be linked to other aspects of the process and particularly automated constraint checking using an IT based approach. The focus for the work is the design of framed buildings. A multi-disciplinary approach has been adopted and the work has been undertaken in close collaboration with practising designers and clients.
