As the successful application of numerical models depends on their suitability to represent the behavior related to the intended use, they should be validated by experimentally obtained results. If the discrepancy between numerically derived and experimentally obtained results is not acceptable, a model revision or a revision of the experiment need to be considered. Model revision is divided into two classes, the model updating and the basic revision of the numerical model. The presented thesis is related to a special branch of model updating, the vibration-based model updating. Vibration-based model updating is a tool to improve the correlation of the numerical model by adjusting uncertain model input parameters by means of results extracted from vibration tests. Evidently, uncertainties related to the experiment, the numerical model, or the applied numerical solving strategies can influence the correctness of the identified model input parameters. The reduction of uncertainties for two critical problems and the quantification of uncertainties related to the investigation of several nominally identical structures are the main emphases of this thesis. First, the reduction of uncertainties by optimizing reference sensor positions is considered. The presented approach relies on predicted power spectral amplitudes and an initial finite element model as a basis to define the assessment criterion for predefined sensor positions. In combination with geometry-based design variables, which represent the sensor positions, genetic and particle swarm optimization algorithms are applied. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a numerical benchmark study of a simply supported beam and a case study of a real test specimen. Furthermore, the theory of determining the predicted power spectral amplitudes is validated with results from vibration tests. Second, the possibility to reduce uncertainties related to an inappropriate assignment for numerically derived and experimentally obtained modes is investigated. In the context of vibration-based model updating, the correct pairing is essential. The most common criterion for indicating corresponding mode shapes is the modal assurance criterion. Unfortunately, this criterion fails in certain cases and is not reliable for automatic approaches. Hence, an alternative criterion, the energy-based modal assurance criterion, is proposed. This criterion combines the mathematical characteristic of orthogonality with the physical properties of the structure by modal strain energies. A numerical example and a case study with experimental data are presented to show the advantages of the proposed energy-based modal assurance criterion in comparison to the traditional modal assurance criterion. Third, the application of optimization strategies combined with information theory based objective functions is analyzed for the purpose of stochastic model updating. This approach serves as an alternative to the common sensitivity-based stochastic model updating strategies. Their success depends strongly on the defined initial model input parameters. In contrast, approaches based on optimization strategies can be more flexible. It can be demonstrated, that the investigated nature inspired optimization strategies in combination with Bhattacharyya distance and Kullback-Leibler divergence are appropriate. The obtained accuracies and the respective computational effort are comparable with sensitivity-based stochastic model updating strategies. The application of model updating procedures to improve the quality and suitability of a numerical model is always related to additional costs. The presented innovative approaches will contribute to reduce and quantify uncertainties within a vibration-based model updating process. Therefore, the increased benefit can compensate the additional effort, which is necessary to apply model updating procedures. I. Application of Qualitative Methods to Research of Polyharmonic Oscillations The development of the qualitative methods of investigation of dynamic systems, suggested by the authors, is the effective means for identification of dynamic systems. The results of the extensive investigations of the behaviour of linear dynamic systems and symmetrical system with double well potential under polyharmonic excitation are given in the paper. Phase space of dynamic systems is multi-dimensional. Each point of this space is characterized by not less than four co-ordinates. In particular: displacement, velocity, acceleration and time. Real space has three dimensions. It is more convenient for the analysis. We consider the phase space as limited to three dimensions, namely displacement, velocity and acceleration. Another choice of parameters of phase planes is also possible [1, 2]. Phase trajectory on a plane is of the greatest interest. It is known that accelerations of points are more sensitive to deviations of oscillations from harmonic ones. It is connected with the fact that power criteria on it are interpreted most evidently. Besides, dependence is back symmetric relative to axis of the diagram of elastic characteristic. Only the phase trajectories allow establishing a type and a level of non-linearity of a system. The results of the extensive investigations of the dynamic systems behaviour under polyharmonic excitation are given in the paper. The use of the given phase trajectories enables us to determine with a high degree of reliability the following peculiarities: - presence or absence of non-linear character of behaviour of a dynamic system; - type of non-linearity; - type of dynamic process (oscillations of the basic tone, combinative oscillations, chaotic oscillations.). Unlike existing asymptotic and stochastic methods of identification of dynamic systems, the use of the suggested technique is not connected with the use of a significant amount of computing procedures, and also it has a number of advantages at the investigation of complicated oscillations. 2003 urn:nbn:de:gbv:wim2-20111215-3684 10.25643/bauhaus-universitaet.368 Professur Informatik im Bauwesen OPUS4-1406 Habilitation Weitzmann, Rüdiger Theory and application of optimization strategies for the design of seismically excited structures The study introduces into the theory and application of optimization strategies in earthquake engineering. The optimization algorithm substitutes the intuitive solution of practical problems done by the engineer in daily practice, providing automatic design tools and numerical means for further exploration of the design space for various extremum states. This requires a mathematical formulation of the design task, that is provided for typical seismic evaluations within this document. Utilizing the natural relation between design and optimization tasks, appropriate mechanical concepts are developed and discussed. The explanations start with an overview on the mechanical background for continua. Hereby the focus is placed on elasto-plastic structures. The given extremum formulations are treated with help of discretization methods in order to obtain optimization problems. These basics are utilized for derivation of programs for eigenvalue and stability analysis, that are applied in simplified linear analysis for the design of seismically excited structures. Another focus is set on the application in simplified nonlinear design, that uses limit state analyses on the basis of nonlinear problem formulations. Well known concepts as the response and pushover analysis are covered as well as alternative strategies on the basis of shakedown theory or cycle and deformation based evaluations. Furthermore, the study gives insight into the application of optimization problems in conjunction with nonlinear time history analyses. The solution of step-by-step procedures within optimization algorithms is shown and aspects of dynamic limit state analyses are discussed. For illustration of the great variety of optimization-based concepts in earthquake engineering, several specialized applications are presented, e.g. the generation of artificial ground motions and the determination of reduction coefficients for design spectrum reduction due to viscous and hysteretic damping. As well alternative strategies for the design of base isolated structures with controlled impact are presented. All presented applications are illustrated with help of various examples. In many cases they are solved iteratively utilizing derivatives of Newton's method. Alternatively, the equations may be expressed in terms of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of an optimization problem and, therefore, may be solved using methods of mathematical programming. To begin with, the work deals with the fundamentals of the formulation as optimization problem. In particular, the requirements of material nonlinearity and contact situations are analyzed. Proximately, an algorithm is implemented which utilizes the usually sparse structure of the Hessian matrix, whereby particularly the convergence behaviour is analyzed and adjusted. The implementation was tested using examples from statics and dynamics of large systems. The results are verified considering the accuracy comparing alternative solutions (e.g. explicit methods). The potential areas of application is shown and the efficiency of the method is evaluated.
