Die Auseinandersetzung mit „r{\"a}umlicher Identit{\"a}t" steht dabei im Mittelpunkt: In deren Dekodierung und Inszenierung wird ein Potenzial erkannt, die Aufenthalts- und Erlebnisqualit{\"a}t der Zwischenstadt zu verbessern. Der Betrachtungsraum der Arbeit zwischen Frankfurt am Main und seinen prosperierenden Umlandgemeinden eignet sich in besonderer Weise, die „Anatomie der Zwischenstadt" zu dekodieren. Schicht f{\"u}r Schicht wird der Versuch unternommen, die eigene Sprache dieses Raumes zu entziffern. Dabei werden Methoden der Beschreibung und Darstellung entwickelt, die den spezifischen r{\"a}umlichen Eigenschaft der Zwischenstadt gerecht zu werden suchen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Auseinandersetzung lassen deutliche Transformationen in der Zwischenstadt erkennen und entheben sie aus ihrer vermeintlichen Eigenschaftslosigkeit. Orte mit Bedeutung, Zusammenh{\"a}nge und Raumgeschichten werden lesbar, es zeigen sich Ans{\"a}tze eigener Urbanit{\"a}t und Zentralit{\"a}t. Die Zwischenstadt hat sich von ihrer einseitigen Dependenz zur Kernstadt gel{\"o}st, tritt aber gleichzeitig in einen umfassenden Wandel, um sich ge{\"a}nderten Lebensformen und Bed{\"u}rfnissen anzupassen. {\"A}ltere, den Raum pr{\"a}gende Einfamilienhausgebiete und Großsiedlungen, aber auch monofunktionale Gewerbegebiete und die typischen suburbanen Einkaufszentren erf{\"u}llen keineswegs mehr automatisch die Wohnw{\"u}nsche und Anforderungen einer Dienstleistungs- und Freizeitgesellschaft. Die Arbeit greift die unverkennbare Transformation des Bildes der Zwischenstadt als Chance zur Qualifizierung dieses Raumes auf. Entwickelt werden Qualifizierungsmodelle, die der Tendenz zu Segregation und Abtrennung mit einer neuen Integrationskultur f{\"u}r die Zwischenstadt begegnen: Als pr{\"a}gender Lebensraum der Stadtregion muss die Zwischenstadt einen großen Teil der Bed{\"u}rfnisse Ihrer Bewohner und Benutzer an den Raum befriedigen. Zunehmend sind diese Bed{\"u}rfnisse nicht nur funktioneller Art, sondern werden {\"u}berlagert von einem Bed{\"u}rfnis nach Raumqualit{\"a}t, Verortung und Identifikationsm{\"o}glichkeiten. F{\"u}r diese Bed{\"u}rfnisse angemessene und auratische Raumbilder zu finden oder zu inszenieren, ist im Angesicht des Status Quo der Stadtlandschaft eine wichtige Herausforderung.}, subject = {Architektur}, language = {de} } @phdthesis{Sung, author = {Sung, Younkyoung}, title = {Cultural Tourism and Social Resilience: Discourse of Historic Cities in East Germany, the Case of Gotha and Eisenach}, doi = {10.25643/bauhaus-universitaet.4092}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:gbv:wim2-20200212-40920}, school = {Bauhaus-Universit{\"a}t Weimar}, abstract = {This thesis explores how cultural heritage plays a role in the development of urban identity by engaging both actively and passively with memory, i.e. remembering and forgetting. I argue that architectural heritage is a medium where specific cultural and social decisions form its way of presentation, and it reflects the values and interests of the period. By the process of remembering and forgetting, the meanings between inhabitant and object in urban environment are practiced, and the meanings are created. To enable the research in narrative observation, cultural tourism management is chosen as the main research object, which reflects the alteration of interaction between the architectural heritage and urban identity. Identifying the role of heritage management, the definition of social resilience and the prospects of cultural heritage as a means of social resilience are addressed. Case region of the research is East Ger- many, thereby, the study examines the distinct approaches and objectives regarding heritage management under the different political systems along the German reunification process. The framework is based on various theoretical paradigms to investigate the broad research questions: 1) What is the role of historic urban quarters in the revitalisation of East German towns? 2) How was the transition processed by cultural heritage management? 3) How did policy affect residents' lives? The case study is applied to macro level (city level: Gotha and Eisenach) and micro level study (object level: specific heritage sites), to analyse the performance of selective remembering and making tourist destination through giving significance to specific heritage. By means of site observations, archival research, qualitative inter- views, photographs, and discourse analysis on printed tourism materials, the study demonstrates that certain sites and characteristics of the city enable creating and focusing messages, which aids the social resilience. Combining theory and empirical studies this thesis attempts to widen the academic discussion regarding the practice of remembering and forgetting driven by cultural heritage. The thesis argues for cultural heritage tourism as an element of social resilience and one that embraces the historic and cultural identity of the inhabitants.}, subject = {Stadtmarketing}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{JimenezGonzalez, author = {Jim{\´e}nez Gonz{\´a}lez, Camilo Arturo}, title = {Bogot{\´a} as a Spatial Sign: A Semiotic Reading of Urban Centrality in Latin America}, doi = {10.25643/bauhaus-universitaet.3249}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:gbv:wim2-20170711-32492}, school = {Bauhaus-Universit{\"a}t Weimar}, abstract = {This project proposes and applies a research strategy to understand types of cities using the case study of Bogot{\´a}. This strategy combines a conceptual framework developed around the notion of 'centrality' and 'urban semiotics' as a method of qualitative enquiry in order to comprehend complex spatial arrangements as significant constituents of cultural geographies. In this sense, this study problematizes current tendencies such as spatial fragmentation and challenges the argument that contemporary urban ensembles in Latin America are either homogenized within globalization trends or illegible entities with no structural coherence. Bogot{\´a} is addressed as an instrumental case study to redraw generalizations developed from different methodological frameworks about the configuration process of spatial structures and their significance within the Latin American geography. Thus the study questions how urban centrality has evolved as an essential socio-cultural phenomenon and in this manner decodes the messages transmitted by main spatial arrangements. As a first step, the study discusses the construction of spatial meaning and its structural interpretation. In addition, the concept of centrality is examined in depth and an urban centrality typology is introduced to enable the analysis of spatial structures in socio-cultural terms. These contents are followed by the discussion of the existing approaches to the topic and their limitations. Subsequently, this research reconstructs the configuration of Bogot{\´a}'s spatial structure which is decoded in the last chapter. The study concludes that the highly fragmented and uneven condition of urban space in Latin America can be read. The case study of Bogot{\´a} substantiates that there is a code that paradoxically provides spatial cohesiveness within unstable socio-spatial hierarchies. Such a spatial code is deciphered through the reading of Bogot{\´a}'s spatial structure whose super-centre denotes 'the sacralisation of authoritarianism'. This is a 'structural meaning' related to a specific or intrinsic logic of spatial concentration that is useful for the further discussion of socio-spatial patterns and the meanings of Latin American cities. The concluding remarks integrate the main arguments and outline lines of action in spatial planning processes.}, subject = {Stadtentwicklung}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Smirnova, author = {Smirnova, Elena}, title = {"Kennst du das Land, wo bl{\"u}ht Oranienbaum?" - A Case Study on Strategic and Territorial Planning in St. Petersburg (Russia)}, doi = {10.25643/bauhaus-universitaet.3255}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:gbv:wim2-20170711-32556}, school = {Bauhaus-Universit{\"a}t Weimar}, abstract = {The research examines the system of strategic and territorial planning of St. Petersburg focusing on Lomonosov (Oranienbaum) as its case study. The study provides the analysis of the planning documentation developed for the city in the post-Soviet period. In particular, it elaborates on the currently enforced Strategy of Economic and Social Development of St. Petersburg-2030 (2014) and the City General Plan (2005), discussing the aspects of their development and implementation, as well as complex interrelation. Thereby, peculiarities of the spatial development of the St. Petersburg agglomeration are also investigated, elaborating on the state policy on agglomerations, historic development of St. Petersburg and relations with the Leningrad Region, governance and imbalances of the St. Petersburg spatial development, including proposed development scenarios. Consequently, the study employs a highly indicative case of the Lomonosov town municipal unit aiming to illustrate the practical implementation of administrative, territorial and strategic policies in a given context within a system of the state planning adopted in St. Petersburg, in particular, taking into consideration recently proclaimed necessity for the transition to a polycentric city model following an innovative scenario for the socioeconomic and spatial development. In particular, Lomonosov (Oranienbaum) is explored egarding its current socio-economic situation and development scenarios: industrial site and cultural tourism. The Oranienbaum museum and nature-reserve is also thoroughly assessed with regard to its cultural tourism potential. Finally, the urban environment of Lomonosov (Oranienbaum) is comprehensively scrutinized in terms of its historic development, residential housing typology, UNESCO World Heritage preservation and local urban heritage. In conclusion, the data on Lomonosov present in the St. Petersburg strategic and territorial planning documents is provided.}, subject = {Lomonossow}, language = {en} }
